Key factors of lesson planning
1. Level of ability:
 What kind of terrain has the student been on before?
 How many years has the student been on snow?
 Assess the learning style
 What is the student excited? What are they nervous about?
Building blocks to the beginner lesson
1. Goal setting and objectives
2. Equipment – how to operate
3. How to fall, reading the fall line
4. Load/unloading lifts
5. Stopping
6. Key movement concepts and body mechanics
7. Performance concepts
8. Lesson progression: turning phases, side slipping, garlands, etc.
9. Teach to learning styles. Each of our students have different learning styles.
Being able to key in on how a student learns will help the lesson flow.
10. Before taking out a new student find out what their learning style is so that
the focus of the lesson is intentional
Relationship Building
1.Building Rapport on Ski hill- ways to build relationships on hill?
2. Conversations about safety and building respect- How can you make responsible
decisions with your group?
3.Consequences- how they relate, putting it on the student, communicating respect.
Make sure consequences apply to the situation, not just an arbitrary consequence.
They need to apply to the situation.
4. Processing the experience with students at the end of the day.
5. Reflection: How can you use Ski/ Snowboarding season to build relationships
with students?
