Snowball and Napoleon’s Symbols By: Brittany and Zoe
Setting Manor Farm Animal Farm Manor Farm The cycle of changing the name of the farm symbolizes the community’s change in their way of living, and how the difference between pigs and humans is not so much apart. In the beginning of the story, the farm is based metaphorically on a dictatorship because Mr. Jones took full control and greed over the animals. As the story continues, the reader discovers the cycle and how the farm ends up the same as in the beginning.
Human’s Farmhouse The farmhouse is significant because it represents the human’s treacherous habits and ways of living. The animals are determined to wipe out the human race from their farm, but the farmhouse remains as a museum and reminder of what they have overcome. The farmhouse separates the pigs and their high qualities from the animals.
Barn The Barn is the commandments’ shelter where animals can constantly refer and learn all seven of them. This is the home to the mediocre where the animals can rest and enjoy their freedom away from the humans.
Animal Farm’s Flag Thedobnjsdkyfkhewaurfyjhdfeufhnakdsuyreuhuieyr7eiuhfeuir6thfyuidytrehyfieruyfurieyt7ryhfr7i6t7reyfhr7eyyhfr7e6treiuy7freyfr7e7re9y7tet9yh The Animal Farm flag is a symbolism for their hope and freedom as a community. It shows England how they have defeated the humans by their advancement in civilization. The color, green, of the flag represents the green fields of England. The hoof and the horn signify the future Republic of the Animals.
Windmill The windmill shows significance through the animals actions on building it without human assistance. With determination and hard work, they completed the contraption by working together as one. By showing their great achievement as a society, the humans went into shock.
Whip The whip Napoleon carries in his trotter symbolizes the return of the humans’ behaviors to the farm. The whip is all of the bad things the animals tried to get rid of by revolting; yet, the whip reappears. However, this time it is carried by a different master.
Battle of Cowshed The animals are prepared for a battle long before the humans ever expect it. With the help of Snowball’s clever thinking, they win their freedom and ownership of the farm. This battle signifies the hard work and weaknesses they will overcome to maintain their freedom in the future.
The Battle of the Windmill Fredrick and his men brutally attack after blowing up the windmill. Being unprepared for battle, the animals have a hard time trying to defeat the intruders. Weary and bleeding, they eventually prevail. In destroying the animal’s windmill, the humans were destroying their success as individuals and their drive to continue. This signifies how all their hard work was abolished, yet they leave victorious in the end.
Beast of England, beast of Ireland, Beast of every land and clime, Hearken to my joyful tidings Of my golden future time. Soon or late the day is coming, Tyrant Man shall be o’erthrown, And the fruitful fields of England Shall be trod by beast alone. Rings shall vanish from our noses, And the harness from our back, Bit and spur shall rust forever, Cruel whips no more shall crack. Riches more than mind can picture, Wheat and barley, oats and hay, Clover, beans, and mangel-wurzels Shall be ours upon that day. Bright will shine the field of England, Purer shall its waters be, Sweeter yet shall blow its breezes On the day that sets us free. For that day we all must labour, Though we die before it break; Cows and horses, geese and turkeys, All must toil for freedom’s sake. Beast of England, beast of Ireland, Beast of every land and clime, Hearken to my joyful tidings Of my golden future time. BEAST OF ENGLAND
COMRADE NAPOLEON Friend of the fatherless! Fountain of happiness! Lord of the swill-bucket ! Oh how my soul is on Fire when I gaze at thy. to be like the sun and the sky Comrade Napoleon! Though our the giver of All that thy creatures love, Full belly twice a day, clean straw to roll upon; Every beast great or small Sleeps at peace in his stall, Though watchest over all, Comrade Napoleon! Had I a sucking-pig, Ere he had grown as big Even as a pint bottle or a rolling pin; He should have learned Calm and in commanding eye, Faithful and true to thee, Yes, his first squeak should be, “ Comrade Napoleon!”
Chants The changing from “Beasts of England” to “Comrade Napoleon” signifies the changing from the policy, Animalism, to a Dictatorship. “Beasts of England” is a song of the rebellion and the good times of Animal Farm, which developed from Old Major’s dream. “Comrade Napoleon” symbolizes the change to a dictatorship, the alterations that were made to the commandments, and to the civilization of the farm. Napoleon changed all of the commandments to rules that he was able to adapt to.
The commandments were used for a different purpose in the beginning compared to the end. In the beginning of the novel, the commandments were written in order to structure their new freedom that the animals had achieved. Although, in the end of the story, the wind had taken a different course. All of the pigs had taken away the animals’ utopia and returned to its original ways, which were those that were used with the humans. C O M M A N D M E N T S
Old Major’s Skull Old Major’s skull is paraded around during the ceremonies. It represents what the animals have overcome in battle, this being the reason why Old Major helped them succeed through his wisdom. Around the time of the rebellion, Old Major’s skull reminds the animals of what they have overcome, which includes those they lost in battle to get this far, and where the idea of Animalism originally came from.
Gun The gun is shot off in respect to those who had been brave and fought for the cause and well being of each other. The gun is used as a sign of importance. Although, the days it goes off change throughout the story, showing how Squealer’s propaganda works well enough to change the society’s views. BANG!
Molly’s Ribbons Molly did not want to have to do the work required of her, but would rather be pampered by the humans as she was before. Molly showed her dependence on others by not wanting to be free. The ribbons symbolize the humans, both good and bad. When Molly was told to dispose of the ribbons and not place so much value on them, it showed how the animals were getting rid of the human race in their new society. This was not what Molly had in mind.
