Rivet joints, Methods of
riveting, types & efficiency
RIVET
A Rivet is a short cylindrical rod having a head
and a tapered tail. The main body of the rivet
is called shank
 One of the earliest methods of fastening
metal together and most popular choices in
today’s applications for it is known as the
most reliable fasteners
 The rivets or used to make permanent
fastening between the plates.
RIVET JOINT
 When two plates join by the rivets is called
rivet joint.
 The rivets joint is used for joining light
metals.
 Rivets joints strength is lower then to
bolts.
 Rivers joints is used in industry
application and aircraft industry
 Rivets joint is permanent fastener to joint
the plates
MATERIALS OF RIVETS
Rivets are generally made from steel.
i. Grade 1(carbon steel)
ii. Grade 2 (carbon-manganese steel)
The material of the rivets must be tough and
ductile. They are usually made of
steel,brass,aluminum,or copper, but when
strength and a fluid tight joint is the main
consideration, then the steel rivets are used
Classic materials for aircraft rivets are
aluminum, titanium, and nickel based alloys

TYPES OF RIVETS JOINT
 There are two types of riveting joint
1. Lap joint
2. Butt joint
Lap joint
A lap joint is that in which one plates
overlaps the other and two plates are
riveted together
Lab joints)
BUTT JOINT
A butt joint is that in which the main plates
are kept in alignment touching each other
and cover plate is placed either one side
or on or on both side of the main plates
Butt joints (ต่อชน)

METHOD OF RIVETING
 The function of rivets join to is to make a connection
that has strength and tightness. The strength is
necessary to prevent failure of joint. The tightness is
necessary tin order to contribute to strength and
prevent leakage as in a boiler or in ship hull.
 when two plates are to be fastener together by a rivet
the holes in the plates are punched and drilled.
Punching is the cheapest method and is used for
relatively thin plates and in structural work. Since
punching injuries the metal around the hole,
therefore drilling is used in most pressure vessel
work. In structural and pressure vessel riveting the
diameter of the rivet hole is usually 1.5mm larger
then the nominal diameter of the rivet
METHOD OF RIVETING
In method of riveting when a cold rivet is used the
process is known as cold riveting and when a hot
rivet is used the process is known as hot riveting.
The cold riveting process is used for structural
joints and hot riveting is used to make leak proof
joints.
The riveting may be done by hand or a riveting
machine. in hand riveting the original head is
backed by a hammer or heavy bar and then the
die or set is placed against the end to be headed
and blows are applied by hammer thus cause
the shank to expand thus filling the hole and tail
is converted into a point.
METHOD OF RIVETING
 As the rivet cold it tend to contract. The
lateral contraction will be slight, but there
will be longitudinal tension introduced in
the rivet which holds the plates firmly
together
 In machine riveting , the die is a part of the
hammer which is operated by air, hydraulic
or steam pressure.
METHOD OF RIVETING
EFFICIENCY OF RIVETS JOINTS
 The efficiency of a riveted joint is defined
as the ratio of the strength of riveted joint
to the strength of the solid plate
 Strength of riveted joint=least of Pt Ps and
Pc
 Strength of solid plate per pitch length
P=p*t*$t
EFFICIENCY OF RIVETS JOINTS
APPLICATION OF RIVETS
 The rivets is used ships building bridges
tanks and boiler shells.
 Aerospace industries use hundreds of
thousands of solid rivets to assemble
structural parts of an aircraft.
 rivets are used in structures where high
joint strength is required
