1. What is a mineral? A mineral is a solid, formed by nature, and has never been alive.
2. Name two examples of minerals. Gold, graphite, diamonds, chalk, corundum, quartz, emerald, ruby, etc.
3. What are the three properties of minerals? Hardness, color, and shape.
4. Name two ways we use minerals. When we pick up a glass When we pour salt on our food When we use a pencil to write When we eat For airplanes, buildings, and washing machines Jewelry and money
5. What is a rock? A rock is a mineral. Some are made of just one mineral while others are made of many minerals.
6. What would you find if you cut open the earth? The crust on the outside is solid. The mantle is under the crust and is so hot that some rocks have nearly melted, and are soft like taffy.
7. Name the three types of rocks. Igneous Sedimentary rock Metamorphic
8. What do we call the process in which rocks change from one type to another? The rock cycle.
9. How do people use rocks? Video games Computers Satellites Microwave ovens Jewelry Roads that are paved Buildings Statues
10. What forces cause metamorphic rocks to form? Heat and pressure Time is also needed
11. What type of rock forms in layers? Sedimentary rock
12. What are fossils? A fossil is something that has lasted from living things that died long ago.
13. What is a mold? The shape of a plant or animal left in sediments when the rock formed.
14. What is a cast? A cast forms when mud or minerals fill a mold.
15. What is an imprint? Molds of leaves or other thin objects. Some are of animals parts decomposed long ago.
16. What do fossils have to do with dinosaurs? They show how dinosaurs lived.
17. How do fossils show how dinosaurs lived? The teeth show what they eat. The skeletons show their size. Where you find fossils indicate where dinosaurs lived.
18. What causes sedimentary rock to form? Water flows or wind blows, carrying sediment. It piles up in layers and eventually forms rock.
Which item is made of graphite? A. Cars B. Pencils C. Buildings D. Ships B. Pencil
20. Name the two types of rock that you are least likely to find fossils. Metamorphic Igneous
