The Earth has two types of movements: rotation around its axis, which takes 24 hours and results in the cycle of day and night as different parts of the Earth face the sun, and rotation around the sun in its orbit. The Earth's axis is an imaginary line passing through the north and south poles. When a part of the Earth faces the sun it is daytime, and when a part faces away it is night.
