Rules and regulations for Admission to MS

1. Eligibility
Graduate of any engineering discipline (subject to the rule of IIT Kharagpur)
are eligible for admission to MS provided they are employed in a project or
they are regular staff in IIT Kharagpur.

2. Short listing
   No short listing is necessary.

3. Entrance Test
The evaluation for entry will be composed of the following.

Academic Performance(40%): An evaluation mechanism proposed by Prof. C.
   R. Mandal (see Appendix I) will be followed to decide 40% marks.

Written test performance (40%): All candidates will sit for a common
entrance test on (1) Basic mathematics, (2) Basics of programming, (3) Basic
concepts of computing systems, and (4) Logical reasoning. All four will have
equal weight in the test. The duration of the test will be 2 hours. Total marks
will be 100 (25 for each part). The syllabus of each of the part can be had at
SIT web site http://sit.iitkgp.ernet.in . A committee of 3 faculty members,
appointed by the HoD, will set the question paper. Ideally, the paper should
be prepared at least one week in advance.

Interview(20%): Motivation, preparedness in the fundamentals of the project
in which the candidate is working, questions on mother subjects etc.

4. Selection
On the day of the test/interview, all faculty members will by requested to join
the selection board. A cutoff will be decided at that time based on the marks
of the candidate in the academic record part (40%) and the written test (40%).
Only those candidates with marks above the cutoff will be called for the
interview. Each faculty member will give an interview mark and the marks
will be averaged for each candidate. The total of all the marks will be added
and a cutoff will be decided by the selection board for final selection of
   candidates.

5. Course assignment for non-CS/IT degree holders
All candidates with non-CS/IT degree will have to do 2 courses as per details
below with at least C grade. These courses are in addition to any other courses
   the DAC may specify.

Set of preparatory courses (in addition to 12-16 credits):
Foundation of Computing Systems (IT 60101, Credit: 4-0-0 = 4)
       Computing Systems Lab (IT69101, Credit: 0-0-3 = 2)

Marking scheme for candidates applying for Admission to MS/PhD in SIT

Objective: To have a formula that assigns marks in such a way that the outcome is
more sensitive to the written test and interview and less sensitive to the scores
achieved by the students earlier.

The aim of this formula is to club together students with somewhat similar
backgrounds so that they have an identical score for the background (academic
weight).

This scheme relies on just a few inputs from faculty members (see below) and
determines the background scores of the candidates in a uniform manner.

Weights are assigned to marks obtained in the school final (SF), HS, graduation
(GM) and masters (MM) and other achievements such as experience and
publications (EP). Score for EP must be assigned by a faculty member given the
responsibility and confirmed by others on the board, preferably as 10, 7, 4 or 0 to
avoid excessive dispersion.

Weights for the components are given below. The faculty might like to alter the
weights, but those should be finalized prior to deployment.

SF - 0.10
HS - 0.15
GM - 0.55
MM - 0.35
EP - 0.10
---------
Sum: 1.25

By this scheme the maximum value of the sum is 125. We work with SS = min
(100, weighted sum of marks).

This scheme gives applicants "generous" benefits for better performance in any of
the above categories. Therefore, better performance in one of the categories (say
HS) could help to compensate for poor performance in other categories (say MM).

Scores are computed from SS according to the table, below.

   SS | score
--------+-------
70 -100 | 70
60 - 70 | 64
50 - 60 | 60
40 - 50 | 55
< 40 | 0
