A Story of MBE Gone Right -
Almost
How does a company design, engineer, manufacture, assemble, test
and deliver a multi-million dollar product that has major
components produced from four different production plants which
are spread across four nations?
Establish thorough Model Based Engineering processes
Murphy’s law always sneaks into the equation:
October 2006, lessons learned while leveraging MBE from
engineering design to manufacturing:
• A major aircraft assembly plant used the latest version of CAD s/w, the design
center at the factory used an older incompatible version. This small oversight
resulted in 530 km of cables throughout the system having to be redesigned.
Although no orders for the system were cancelled, the manufacturer still had to
pay millions in late delivery penalties.

• Dedicated MBE process – where/how does the business want
to re-use engineering data?
– Where’s the ROI?
• Contract requirements – pass down
– What are the customers expectations?
– Negotiations for requirements/expectations? – Keep the end game in
mind. Expectations aren’t always covered by contract requirements.
– Draw a clear path from start to finish to include business processes.
– Ensure requirement and process pass-down to sub-contractors, what
is the business expecting to receive? Drawings, models, STP/ DWGs?

– Source data is upmost importance to avoid re-work/ penalties?

  • #4: Source – Wikipedia – Initial production of the A380 was troubled by delays attributed to the 530 km (330 mi) of wiring in each aircraft. Airbus cited as underlying causes the complexity of the cabin wiring (98,000 wires and 40,000 connectors), its concurrent design and production, the high degree of customization for each airline, and failures of configuration management and change control. The German and Spanish Airbus facilities continued to use CATIA version 4, while British and French sites migrated to version 5. This caused overall configuration management problems, at least in part because wiring harnesses manufactured using aluminium rather than copper conductors necessitated special design rules including non-standard dimensions and bend radii; these were not easily transferred between versions of the software.
