 Mahle Behr India Ltd is involved only in tier
one product designing and development. It
has many competitors such as Modine and
Valeo. Hence it has to ensure its Product
development process has a competitive edge
over its competitors.
 Mhale Behr has to follow a very stringent
policies and procedure which form its
knowledge management base
 Behr deals only in tier 1 Product designing
and development I.e. it takes odrers only
from OEM’s (Original Equipment
Manufacturers) such as Navi Star, Audi, Tata
Motors, etc
 Acquisition of order from OEM’s is the most
important process for BEHR.

 First Marketing engineer approaches the clients
(OEM’s) to know their requirements and prepares
RFQ ( Reference for quote) or cooling module
accordingly.
 RFQ is presented to design team manager who
allots a team on the project
 Designing team prepares a rough module after
studying the RFQ within 1-2 week. For this they
work hand in hand with costing department to
make a rough estimates of costing, details of
which are included in Rough module
 OEMs accept or reject the proposal on the basis
of this rough module.

 After the client accepts the rough module it’s
party time for marketing dept but work time
for the core designing team
 Designing team offers to enhance the OEMs
product by application of either bench mark
technology or New technology which is often
developed by R&D team of BEHR. Because of
BEHR’s good reputation in the market
companies usually accept the innovative
technologies suggested by the company.
 Once proposal for new technology is
accepted the rough design module undergoes
through Concept Validation (CV)
 CONCEPT VALIDATION
◦ Physical prototype: Designing team (DT) makes a
physical prototype of the rough module
◦ Rough design: after studying the physical prototype
rough design is again modified to match it with the
requirements of the client.
◦ Mounting: study is conducted by DT if the size and
dimensions of the physical prototype could be
packaged as per the requirement of the client
 DESIGN VALIDATION
◦ PERFORMANCE TEST: it is conducted virtually using
soft wares and simulators on the enhanced rough
design and physically on the physical prototypes
◦ Finalization: attempts are made to make the
prototype as close as per the requirement. Then the
prototype is presented to OEMs for approval. If the
prototype is not approved modifications are made
as per the requirement and the process continues
until the prototype is finalized by the OEM.
 Production Validation
◦ PPAP: Process Part Approval Program. It is presented to
suppliers and assembly line which gives them an idea
about the requirement for production process
◦ Tooling Kick Off: this explicitly defines the quality of
supplies required from the suppliers.
◦ Pre Series Run: this process is conducted to test the
efficiency and effectiveness of the process during
regular course of production
With this the designing and development process of
product is approved by OEMs and company can start
with the regular production of the approved parts

Pre-series test
run (2 weeks)
 After completion of pre test run the company
starts with the regular production of the
product. Date of SOP (start of production) is
strictly mentioned by the clients. BEHR has
the policy of completing the entire
development process 2-3 weeks before date
of SOP.
