• Round table discussions and forums
• Presentations and briefings at industry events
9
Drivers for improved visualisation
• Client’s understanding of new infrastructure
• Complex systems with multiple interfaces
• Increasing stakeholder engagement
Visualising multi-dimensional models –
Drivers
10
Visualising multi-dimensional models –
360 degrees immersion
Enhanced engineering visualisation solutions
• 360 degree immersive visualisation
• Simplifies communication of complex design and construction information
• Ability to interact with the model in real time
11
Design and construction applications
• Multi disciplinary design reviews
• Stakeholder engagement
• Improve all-round project safety
• Testing construction phase options

Immersive Visualisation Technology
What it looks like…….
13
14
Applied on existing well developed models with project
finished
• LU Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street Station Upgrades used
as the example projects
• Optimised technology for modelling & visualisation
• Undertook mock design reviews:
• Clash detection
• Premises layout – eg escalator run offs
• Equipment location – eg CCTV and access hatches
Tottenham Court Road Station Upgrade
Immersive Visualisation Technology
Three stage project application – Phase 1
Bond Street Station Upgrade
15
Applied on live project with modelling already under
development and project nearing completion
• LU Bromley By Bow Station Upgrade used as the example project
• Analysed value add options with design for operation:
• Maintainability assessments, & replacement strategies
• Operation management – training and commissioning
• Validate programme
• Possessions planning
Bromley by Bow
Immersive Visualisation Technology
Three stage project application – Phase 2
16
Immersive Visualisation Technology
Three stage project application – Phase 3
Applied on early adopter project, at the start of the modelling and project
• LU Moorgate station upgrade & step free access first “real” project application. Feasibility scheme:
• Assessed entrance location / configuration / visibility
• Analysed spatial planning for new ticket hall
• Assessed maximised secondary revenue configurations
• Drivers for application:
• IVT approach in our proposal submission.
• Feasibility scheme aligns with our earlier R&D findings.
• Support our R&D analysis to determine next steps / where next with the technology.
• “I have seen the Igloo before but that was a sales pitch and it would be interesting to see the Igloo
being used for a real meeting” – Steve Wright, LU Programme BIM Manager
17
Immersive Visualisation Technology
Three stage project application – Phase 3
Moorgate Station and IVT on project
• 20 options and sub-options considered and configured
• 3 options selected for the immersive media platform
• Design review workshop and option selection with stakeholders within
immersive environment
• How it worked:
• Driver controlled the models and walkthrough
• Design team captured comments live with reference tags attached to
the model
• Screenshots were taken and embedded into directly into a final report
18
Immersive Visualisation Technology
Three stage project application – Phase 3
Immersive visualisation findings
Clearer visualisation of issues and impacts
50% more options assessed in the time compared with 3D model on desktop/hard copy
inter disciplinary reviews
Minimal additional investment needed with models correctly configured
Creates passenger experience part of the decision making process
Much earlier operator/maintainer engagement
19
Immersive Visualisation Technology
Three stage project application – Phase 3
Immersive visualisation limitations
“Over” visualise
Accessibility to facility
Ability to verify engineering model
Durations in the immersive environment
20
Immersive Visualisation Technology
Three stage project application – Phase 3
Post project feedback
• Unanimous support for the immersive platform from stakeholders with key findings per sector:
• PM – real time decision making
• Maintenance/Ops – in depth assessment of relatively high level models
• Architect/designers – decisions makers become the customers
• Numerous ideas emerged for future development
• Shortlisted for New Civil Engineer Tunnelling Awards – Technology Innovation of the year.
21
Immersive visualization technology
Future applications and opportunities
22
Capturing schedule and cost data - 4D and 5D
• Visualisation experience not limited to civils and building
services
• Interactive project controls – time and cost
• Reporting, training, etc.

• HS2 BIM Room
• Developed specific augmented reality
solutions
• Prototyped the use of game engines to
visualise the design
25
Summary - Immersive Visualisation Technology
A new platform for the
management and delivery of
infrastructure projects
Faster and more targeted design

Editor's Notes

  • #3: Thanks CH2M is a programme management and delivery organisation.
  • #4: Pioneering and developing over the last 4 years Background, drivers and need
  • #5: Technology emerging as enabler infrastructure projects. Increasing volumes of data, “big Data”. Challenge to capture, store, analyse, share, update, query, secure or visualise BIM is at heart of the digital transformation UK build and infrastructure environment, and core uses 3D models and CDE to drive efficiency of activity around asset delivery and operation.
  • #6: model is foundation upon which everything else on the project can build, central repository of information upon which numerous outputs are possible. Data reviewed, and analysed, we can produce drawings, and in a common data environment can run clash detection, and undertake cost estimation. But whilst this looks simple….
  • #7: The reality extremely complex. Infrastructure projects with data and processes that are either outdated, inadequate or simply missing, systems used that are different and present interoperability issues, in particular at the interface with more than one client organisation. We needed a new way to communicate ideas amongst our teams. A way that is more “fit for purpose” in the BIM era
  • #9: Year long innovation initiative – 6 workshops 70 attendees Industry engagement activities Understand what the visualisation challenges were Discuss ways to resolve them Collaborate outside the competitive project environment
  • #10: Adding dimensions make us more efficient but it creates new challenges. Teams need new innovative ways to communicate this information. Middle East station anecdote CH2M has been developing and applying immersive visualisation technologies for the past 4 years and we are increasingly finding additional benefits to these innovations as the technology develops.
  • #11: Immersion provides benefits beyond the traditional “desktop” visualisation tools: Step inside a giant VR headset better perception of a data geometry –beats software driven interference checking more intuitive data understanding – catches physical and operational issues better retention of the perceived relationships in the data
  • #12: use of such technologies throughout the project life cycle. added value in different stages.
  • #15: CCTV camera example for ‘Design for Operation’ – that is where the government sees the real benefit of BIM. The usage of IVT for project controls.
  • #16: Managing conflicting stakeholder requirement in immersive environment, assessing entrance location and daylight impacts . The usage of IVT for project controls .
  • #18: Lessons learnt from phase 1 and 2 supported seamless model configurations for use within the immersive environment.
  • #19: Allows simplified visualisations of technical issues to non technical audience, or in a multi disciplinary project to differing technical expertise.
  • #20: Temptation to want to review more options, or look at more detail, whilst Igloo very mobile, for one off projects practicality not easy, can it become the tool of choice? If there are errors on engineering model not as ready to interrogate in immersive environment
  • #21: Stakeholders were walking in the shoes of the end users
  • #23: Graphical construction simulation of cost and schedule data Compelling visuals to demonstrate impact on baseline from decisions Faster, more informed decision making
  • #24: Simulation of pedestrian flows algorithms Fire simulation New design layouts
  • #25: HS2 BIM Room digital area to interact with the model.
