Cambodia • Independent from France since 1953 • Political unrest since 1970 • Khmer Rouge regime 1975 – 1979 2.2 million died • Cambodian- Vietnamese war 1979 - 1989 • Post Khmer Rouge famine: 650,000 perished • 15.2 million people • 50% younger than 22 years old • Strong economic growth – textiles and tourism • Average income is US$2.60 per day • Over 30% living on less than US$1 per day • Limited education amongst older Cambodians

Samaky Community • Haphazard development with insecure land tenure • 75 households accommodating 346 people • No municipal services: • Rubbish collection • Electricity • Sewerage and drainage • Potable water • Reported monthly household income average is US$159 and ranges from US$30 to US$400 • 55% of households report full employment
