- 2. Home Same looks, different compound Submitted by cbt on Sat, 21/02/2009 - 3:07am THE MaxGrip AT2 is the second set of new 4x4 tyres for Dunlop in Malaysia after almost 10 years. The first was the Formula D01 and J3 road series launched last year. The new tyres are a direct result of Continental AG’s input in terms of tyre technology, including tread pattern design, tyre compound formulation and tyre construction. We spoke to Ruaidhri “Rory” Gleeson, 31, the head of the Continental design team that developed the new tyres for Malaysia. “When we design a tyre, we have to talk with the dealers and the users. I’m based in Hannover but being in Germany only is not good. You have to go to the ground and hear their voices, their opinions," said Gleeson, a mechanical engineering graduate from Ireland who has been with Conti developing tyres for Asia for the past five years. “The customers in Asia know what they want. The Malaysian tyre user wants comfort compared with the Thai user who values durability and higher overloading tolerance. “So the tyre may look the same but generally speaking, the tyre compound for different markets are formulated to suit individual needs.” Continental Sime Tyres (CST) inherited from Sime Darby the licence to use the Dunlop brand in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. The brand slots in between the premium Continental and the value-for-money Barum. CST recently launched the MaxGrip AT2 and the Road Trekker 2 tyres in Genting Highlands. Both are now available at all CST’s network dealers.
