The director of the shower scene in Carrie uses non-diegetic music at the beginning to set a calm but tense mood as Carrie showers alone. Throughout the rest of the scene, a range of diegetic sounds are used to convey the events within the scene.
1. Sample sound paragraph
In the shower scene in ‘Carrie’, the director uses non-diegetic score
music. Towards the beginning of the scene, we hear slow-paced, serious
music whilst she is showering on her own. The music connotes the calm
mood as she is at peace with showering away from the other girls.
However, there is a serious tone which indicates the tension and
foreshadows a serious/concerning event.
Homework: finish this paragraph (you write the evidence and analysis)
Point: Throughout the rest of the scene, there is a range of diegetic
sounds used within the scene.
