Pizza originated in Italy, where flatbread topped with ingredients has been eaten for over 3,000 years. While pizza was introduced to America in the late 19th century, it did not become widely popular until the 1950s with the rise of pizza chains. Today, pizza is the most popular frozen food and at least once a month 93% of Americans eat pizza, consuming on average 23 pounds per year. Pizza has evolved from a food for the poor in Italy to a global multi-billion dollar industry dominated by delivery chains.
