PRESENTATION OUTLINE
• INTRODUCTION
• NAP DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
• SCALING UP IN SPECIFIC PRIORITY AREAS
• KENYA NAP PROGRAM
• ONGOING ADAPTATION STRATEGIES
INTRODUCTION
• The NAP (2015-2030) is Kenya’s first plan on
adaptation
• The adaptation TWG formed during the NCCAP
(2013-2017) process continued with NAP
development
• With Inclusions of civil society, academia and
private sector
• Support from DFID through Finance Innovation
CC Fund (FICCF) and Climate & Development
Knowledge Network (CDNK)
NAP Development Process
• It sort to operationalise the NCCAP (2013-2017)
- Heavily borrowed from its adaptation chapter
• Kenya’s adaptation priority actions are based on the
vulnerabilities described in the NAP 2015
• Undertook stakeholder consultations and validation
process
• Priority actions were picked based on NCCAP, ATAR
proposed long list of priority actions and sector
emerging issues
• Aim was to enhance resilience of the agricultural
sector value chains
• And complement or upscale ongoing activities while
embracing new initiatives and innovations
Scaling up in specific priority areas
Criteria used to develop short list
- Urgency and ease of implementation in short-term
- Compatibility with the NCCAP adaptation actions
- Compatibility with the Medium Term Plan actions
- Low-regrets option if implemented
• These priorities were further refined by the
adaptation TWG of NCCAP process
• The NAP process identified priority areas across the
sector
Priority Adaptation areas – Crops
• Increase awareness on CC impacts on the agric sector &
capacity building
• Conduct climate risk and vulnerability assessments of the
agriculture sector – County based
• Coordinate and mainstream climate change adaptation
• Promote uptake of CC related info in agric
• Develop and upscale specific adaptations actions
• Promote indigenous knowledge on crops
• Promote and implement CSA practices
Priority Adaptation areas – Livestock
• Increase awareness on CC impacts on the livestock
sub- sector
• Strengthen LUM systems including rangelands,
fodder banks and strategic reserves
• Capacity bldg on livestock insurance, early warning
systems, Mgt systems and bleeding
• Develop new feeds formulations
• Promote livelihood diversification
• Restore degraded areas
• Promote CSA
Priority Adaptation areas – Fisheries
• Undertake risk and vulnerability assessment in
fisheries value chain
• Enhance the capacity of the Fisheries sub-sector on
CC impacts
• Develop and implement a pilot on climate resilient
fish spps.
• Strengthen monitoring capacity on exploitation of
inland waters and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ)
• Promote up-scaling of climate resilience strategies/
technologies
NAP-Ag Kenya Project
The Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans
(NAP-Ag) program by FAO/UNDP will lay the foundation for
the integration of Agriculture in to NAP by:
 Strengthening technical and institutional capacity on
National Adaptation Plans.
 Developing integrated roadmaps for National Adaptation
Plans.
 Improving evidence-based results for National
Adaptation Plan and
 Promoting advocacy and knowledge-sharing on National
Adaptation Plans.
The NAP-Ag project Kenya Progress
• Has commenced support on study to assess the agric-
sector related barriers to NAP implementation.
• Capacity Needs assessment for climate change
adaptation planning in 5 key ministries
• The project will support the finalisation of Kenya
Climate Smart Agric Framework Programme (KCSAFP
2016-2030)
• Development of an M&E plan for the KCSAFP
• Support for participation at NAP Expo in Bonn
