An initiative of Engineers Australia, Victoria Division
“ Engineers are originators and facilitators. Their role in society is to use a multiplicity of skills to transform concepts into structures, factories, services, systems and manufactured products. They are responsible for the safe and efficient construction and operation of industries and infrastructure. Their activities span most areas of the Australian economy. Their design skills determine the cost of production and the quality of the product. ” Source: Prime Minister's Science Council, 1991, Engineering in Australia. What are Engineers?

How Engineering affects us Engineering is used by all of us everyday! What have you done since you woke up this morning?
What is the role of an Engineer? To ask questions such as: Is the project viable & safe? What are the processes which underpin it? How can we do this more efficiently? How can we minimise the impact of the project? What lessons did we learn?
Where can Engineering take YOU! All over Australia Europe USA Antarctica 3rd World Countries ANYWHERE!
Why Engineering? Travel Serious role Satisfaction of seeing what you’ve built Diversity of jobs. Learn how to learn Management, Banking, Consultant, Insurance, etc Learn how things work & improve them New, exciting challenges & opportunities everyday
What can an Engineer earn? The average graduate salary for engineers is $A54,000 . Other professions starting salaries are: - Dentistry $74,000 - Engineering $54,000 - Medicine $50,000 - Mathematics $48,300
Why Engineering? Supply vs Demand 3 rd highest paying graduate salary Recent increase in market 30yo could earn >$ A120K/year or $75/hour . Management salaries?!?
Engineering & YOU! What do you enjoy? What interests you? Have you thought much about careers? Consider Engineering!
Is Engineering for You? Are you creative and innovative? Are you quick at learning? Do you have a good memory? Are you curious and inquisitive?
Your Career – Preparation What subjects are pre-requisites to studying engineering at university/TAFE? Each university is slightly different when it comes to essential/desirable background studies. Most universities require that you have: Completed your finishing senior school certificate ie HSC, VCE (entry marks vary at each university) High level Math's (Advanced or Specialist) Physics (Chemistry may be an advantage depending on the field of Engineering you wish to study) English (middle grade or better) Check out the engineering pre-requisites with the university/TAFE you are most likely to study at for specific information. You can obtain this information by accessing the DEST education website at www.dest.gov.au/tenfields/engineering/engineering.html
Your Career – Your Choice I am thinking about studying engineering, but I am not 100% sure what engineering is or which engineering field I should apply to study. Do you have a list of engineering fields by description? There are over 200 types of engineering. To discover which field would suit best, read about them on www.myfuture.edu.au If you are still unsure, talking to a lecturer or a current engineering student or engineer in the field is a great idea. They will be able to point out the subtle differences and the advantages/disadvantage between fields that will help you decide which field would best suit your skills and interests. The Careers Team at Engineers Australia can put you in contact with someone in the field if you don’t know anyone. You can call them toll free on 1300 366 613 or via email [email_address]
Overall Engineering represents….. An opportunity to contribute to society An opportunity to use your technical and non-technical skills An opportunity to deal with new technology An opportunity to develop your people skills
