CHOOSING THE RIGHT TOPIC SCOPE
To help you determine if you have
constructed a research statement
that is properly scoped, consider
the questions on the following
pages.
z Recognize that
you will learn and
refine your topic as
you conduct your
research, so make
the best judgment
you can at this
point.
•How well does the scope of your topic fit the
objectives and requirements of your research
project?
Requirements
z For advanced writing literature
reviews, you will want to define your
topic to be broad enough that you can
find at least the number of relevant
articles required by your instructor, but
narrow enough to not get overwhelmed
with too many relevant articles
•How new is the area of research?
z Some research areas are
so new, not much has been
published; other areas have
been heavily researched
over many years and
present a very large body of
work, often requiring you to
narrow your scope to a
smaller aspect of the overall
work.
•How available is information on the
topic?
z Some information is kept
confidential; e.g., failure
rates of commercial
products, safety records of
businesses, strategic
information, and new
product design information.
