Guided by the principlesof Anti-Racism/Anti- Oppression, Sistering works to change social conditionswhich endanger women’swelfare.” (Sistering, 2014) Brief Her(his)tory “Sistering wasfounded early in 1980, when asmallgroup of social service agency representatives, women livingin hostels and community residentscametogether to discuss the needsof homelessand transient women in downtown Toronto. Particularly women’sneed for a safe and welcomingwomen’sonly space duringtheday, and a space wherewo men could access food, supportand information” (Sistering, 2014) Inspirations studio “Inspirationsstudio is a social enterprisefor low-incomewomen who have been impacted by poverty, homelessness, traumaand mental health issues. Inspirations Studio is a project of Sistering a woman’sorganization that offers practical and emotionalsupportto women and worksto change social conditions, which endanger women’swelfare. In particular, membersare taught pottery and businessskills so that they can earn income. Attendance at Inspirations Studio facilitates the recovery of self-esteem, respect, dignity and creates a community of entrepreneurs.”(Inspiration Studio, 2014)

Inspirations studio is a project of Sistering, a woman’s organization that offers practical and emotional support to women and works to change social conditions, which endanger women’s welfare. By purchasing any of these products, you are helping to facilitate the recovery of self-esteem, respect, dignity, and create a community of entrepreneurs. P O S T E R D
- 9. 9 Social Media AD Weaimed to reach all the studentsand professors from Ryerson University. Wesend personalemails to our professorsand colleagues about the event. Sarah help usreach professorsat the Chang School. Wecreated a Facebook page and madeinvitation to all our friends. There wereseveral Facebook wall posts and the Sistering’s Facebook page. Theresa madea post on Sistering wall about the event and shared with her friends. Wealso individually spokein our classes to inform our professorsand colleague and give reminders. - 10. 10 Sales Day for Sistering!
- 11. 11 We were very excited and nervous as we approached our final Sales Day. During the sales day, we made sure that we were engaged in active promotion of selling of the products. We explained to the buyers and the prospective buyers about significance of the products we were selling and gave them information about Sistering. We made sure to share small yet significant details like the initial carved at the bottom of each pottery and the potteries that were made by a womyn who was blind. We felt that throughout our selling, people appreciated and thanked us for sharing with them about Sistering and engaging in this project. For example, some people started donating after purchasing their own pottery.
- 12. 12 At the end of the day, we were proud that we were able to raise $ 203 for Sistering!
- 13. 13 To incorporate topic of homelessness in our project, we created fun facts that were distributed to everyone. This served as to raise social awareness about homelessness. The facts were research-based and most were related to youths. FUN FACTS
- 14. 14 We thought our first decision to actual decide to do this project was challenge. For most of us, this project was very different so we weren’t sure if we can do it. However, we all overcame our self- doubtand decided to make our first step! And we never regretted that Initially, wehad some difficulty contacting and reaching Ryerson personnelto schedulea location for our sale. One of usemailed the person and other went to the office after hearing no reply. After severaldays, we finally got a responseand we wereso happy! One of our biggest challenges was scheduling to plan and organize for the event. Weall had differentclass and work schedule so it wasa challenge for usto meet together. To accommodate, we connected online, texts, and met before early before class. Duringthe sales day, we divided ourselvesinto two group to work shifts. We all accommodated for each other time by being flexible and goal-oriented to meet our deadlines. In termsof advertisement, most of us were familiar and comfortable with Facebook. Therefore, werelied on one outlet and this was slightly limiting.
- 15. 15 When I first heard about Sistering from Sarah, I had absolutely no idea what it was all about. As I got into a group for our final project, I wasn’t really sure how everything was going to turn out in coordinating and working with Theresa who managed the Inspirations Studio. But upon our first meeting with Theresa, I was amazed by what the studio and Sistering had to offer for the women out there that are either experiencing homelessness or are marginalized. I was a lot keener, and excited to take on this project soon after that first meeting. Although we struggled a little in coordinating to meet as a group as often, I think we did an over all great job and pulled the main fundraising day well! In addition, the whole day of the fundraising event felt new and challenging as we were all trying to market the beautiful pieces, which I have personally never done before. Otherwise, I felt my overall experience during this project was factual, fun and inspiring! - Lhakshini I am proud that we worked so well as a team throughout the planning to actually making this event happen! It makes me glad that we had this opportunity through our course where we could be creative and contribute something to social enterprise like Sistering. It was really a fun ride!! Thank you’ll! - Dolkar In the beginning, I was a bit nervous because I was unsure how to conduct a fundraiser. However, with the support of my teacher, Sarah, and my group members, I was able to reduce my anxiety and truly focus on what needed to get done. Overall, the fundraiser was a success as we were able to raise $203! It makes me feel very happy to know that the money will be directly going to the women who made the wonderful potteries. I would sincerely like to express my gratitude towards Sarah and Theresa who provided us the opportunity to partake in this wonderful project. Thank you so much. - Ashiana Rizal Team Reflection Overall this entire experience was a great one. Prior to this experience I had never heard of the Sistering or Inspirations organizations. Although I was aware of the various homeless shelters in the city, I was unaware of drop- in organizations such as Sistering. Being able to explore the studio made me think about how unfortunate it is for people with so much talent that are subject to circumstances such as homelessness. At the same time, although I didn’t get to meet these women, seeing the initials on each cup made me feel as though I was making a difference for these women just by being involved in the sale. I felt very grateful to be apart of this experience and hope to support Sistering in the future. Bianca I was so honoured to have an opportunity to contribute to the Sistering organization. I have realized that homelessness can be addressed by initiating small changes like these. I am aware that selling the pottery was a great way to empower the women at the organization. I hope that I get more opportunities to address homelessness in the future. - Winnie
