Francisco Pizarro was born in 1475 in Trujillo, Spain as an illegitimate son who grew up herding pigs. In 1531, he led an expedition to conquer the Inca Empire, defeating Emperor Atahualpa at Cajamarca through surprise attack in 1532. Pizarro went on to capture the Inca capital of Cuzco and founded the city of Lima in 1535, which became the capital and largest city of Peru. Pizarro quarreled with Diego de Almagro over territorial control and had him executed, leading to a conspiracy against Pizarro by Almagro's followers. Pizarro was assassinated in Lima in 1541.
