Hard News Story:
Kallum: Good Evening and Welcome to The Late News with me Kallum
Graham
Lauren: And me Lauren Weston. Tonight we’ll be looking at the worrying
increase of arson attacks within the midlands and on a brighter note ‘music’ to
the ears of many children on hospital waiting lists…
Insert: Title Sequence 30 sec
Lauren: The Highest number of arson attacks has been recorded this year in
the Midlands since 2000,- is Bonfire night becoming the hotspot of crime
within our local area?
Kallum: In 2004 under the firework health and safety regulations, a new age
restriction was put in place to prevent those under the age of 18 from
purchasing fireworks.

(Voice Over)
Lauren: The highest recorded figure of firework attacks was 202 dating back
to 1996. Since then numbers have been dropping, reaching as low as 6
people in 2013. However, this year there has already been 35 recorded
attacks within the Midlands alone.
Snapchat Footage
Of Firework being thrown
(Voice Over)
Kallum: This Snapchat shows a recent incident, where a young man was
attacked by a firework, this was the spark for further activity.
Cut to Interview with victim in
homely setting.
Gemma: I’m here today at the home of Tom jones, who was the victim of this
attack. Hello Tom so where did this attack take place.
Tom Jones: The attack took place in Brueton park at 2 in the afternoon.
Gemma: What was going through your mind when the firework was thrown in
your direction?
Tom Jones: all I could think about was how do I get out of this situation and
why were these people particularly aiming this attack towards me?
Gemma: Tom managed to get away but not before another firework was
thrown and the jacket he was wearing catching fire.
(Cut to video of Tom holding burnt jacket looking sad)
Gemma: Thanks to the quick thinking of a friend, Tom was saved from any
further damage but this is not an isolated incident…
Some of you will remember earlier this year the arson attack on a local
supermarket in Acocks Green also started by a group of young people playing
with Fireworks and resulting on 1000’s of pounds worth of damage.
In both of these cases these people we lucky to have escaped serious injury
but…
Lauren: St John Ambulance recently issued this advice following a survey
which revealed that a third of parents and grandparents have witnessed an
injury during Bonfire Night celebrations.

Mrs grant: “We are urging everyone to learn basic first aid skills ahead of
Bonfire Night as shocking statistics reveal a third of parents and grandparents
have witnessed an injury during Bonfire night celebrations* and 4,506 people
visited A&E from 2014-2015 for treatment of a fireworks-related injury.** This
is an increase of 111% from the previous year”
Kallum: Police Constable Mrs L Grant backed this up with a plea to young
people across the midlands…
Mrs Grant: ‘Please can we remind both young and old of the dangers of
playing with fire and particularly in the run up to bonfire night. A momentary
lapse in judgement can cause yourself or someone else irreparable damage
and you a prison sentence- be safe this bonfire night, have fun but stay safe
and please if you see anyone acting irresponsibly with fireworks call out
hotline immediately’.

Midlands Police website.
Soft News Story:
At the Studio
Lauren: On a lighter note, the band , The Vamps, who started out as 4 boys
from Sutton chasing a dream in 2012, have come back to West Midlands to
throw a concert dedicated to raising money for Birmingham Children’s
Hospital.
Kallum: This is all thanks to Sutton Coldfield city sensation and The Vamps
lead singer, 22 year old Bradley Simpson, who has announced that he will be
taking the band to Birmingham.
Lauren: This decision has come after the 22 year old heard the devastating
news that the Children’s Hospital didn’t have enough money for newer
equipment to help children with diseases such as liver transplant surgery and
small bowel transplant services.
Kallum: This was highlighted earlier this year when 9 year old Chris Rogers
tragically passed away from liver disease whilst still awaiting surgery due to
the lack of specialist equipment. In the Midlands waiting lists for this type of
surgery are 25% higher than in the rest of the UK.
Lauren: The concert that was played in the O2 Arena has altogether raised
Three hundred and fifty six thousand pounds after being sold out. The band
has vowed to donate all of the proceeds to the Children’s Hospital.
Nurse vox pop
Nurse: This will make a huge difference to the patients and families here
within the children’s hospital. We are so very grateful to the band and all their
fans for all the support
Fan vox pop
Fan: I’m from Sutton Coldfield. I’m proud to be a fan of a band that
remembers where they came from and still want to help people.
Fan friend: BRADLEY WE LOVE YOU.)
Back to the studio
Kallum: Here are some videos that were taken by fans during the concert.
