again on set and then again in the cutting room’
(Sight and Sound. December 2005)
What is a screenplay?
 A screenplay, also known as a script is the
written description of a film.
 The script is the text in which the film is
based. It contains the verbal description of
the action as well as the dialogues between
the characters.
 Although at first sight the layout of a film script
may look complicated it is, in fact, very simple
and clear. There are slight variations in layout
usually depending on the writer’s taste, but ALL
of them MUST include certain elements.
 These elements are SEQUENCE/SCENE number,
TIME, PLACE, LOCATION, NARRATION and
CHARACTERS’ DIALOGUES.
Sequence 1. INT. Court/DAY
A large board with a long table and humongous podium. On
the side of the room are many government officials
robotically and sequentially next to each other. At each end
of the table is a microphone with one end having seat with a
State secretary. Above the secretary, is a podium with the
State Chancellor Standing at top with a grip of files and his
own microphone as well.
SECRETARY:
Wordsworth, Romney, Obsolescence. (Turning to Chancellor)
He is waiting, Chancellor.
CHANCELLOR:
Order him in
SECRETARY:
Wordsworth, Romney, Obsolescence.
A feeble man walks through two large doors. Behind him are
other people awaiting their fate in a waiting room.As the
two doors close, he is led by a guard to his microphone. His
eyes have a look of confusion, awe, and fear as he looks
around the word. The Narrator's voice comes over the scene.
Specify the
SEQUENCE
NUMBER, TIME
and PLACE
Describe the
ACTION
Introduce the
CHARACTERS
before the
dialogues
(names in
CAPITALS)
 The PLACE (Interior/exterior) and TIME (Day/Night)
is specified in every sequence, as well as the
LOCATION where the action takes place:
Sequence 1. INT/DAY. Court
 A brief description of the action is added to present
the characters in their environment. This text is
aligned to the left of the page:

Chancellor standing in the doorway, smiling...

 A storyboard is
the graphic
depiction of the
script, including
the audiovisual
technical notes.
 It is based on a graphic depiction of the image
as will be seen on the screen.
 In the following slides you can find some
examples of storyboards.
 Can you identify theTV program or film they

Script and storyboard
 A storyboard is the graphic depiction of the
script, including the audiovisual technical
notes.
 All aspects of camera work, sound, mise-en-
scene and editing have to be specified in a
storyboard.
 Don’t panic if you are not good at drawing:
Your storyboard does not need to be a ‘piece
of art’
 However, it needs to contain ALL the
information that every member of the filming
crew might need during the filming and
editing process.
Script and storyboard
