The title of the film
wording of the title and genre narrative implications
“The title of the film is called Morvor. The name comes from the Estonian translation for
Murder. The idea behind this is that Frank’s, (who is one of the main characters) surname
is Morvor. For the audience, it portrays a underlining darkness about the character that
leads the audience to feel negatively about Frank’s character as the audience may think
there is something that is fundamentally wrong with him as his own name suggests terrible
things about him.
This fits well with the genre that we are trying to portray (which is detective thriller) as the
names of most films within this genre will have a negative meaning. For example, the film
“Prisoner” uses a word that suggests, captivity, brutality, darkness etc… This is meant to
reflect the story plot and genre of this detective thriller.
The placement of the title in the teaser trailer is set towards the end. It comes after the
narrative titles which help build up tension towards the end of the trailer. The whole trailer
builds to a climax which ends with the title. By placing the title at the end of the climax, the
audience will remember the title as it is the first shot that comes into view after there has
been a switch from tension to relief. This idea is used by by most films across the majority
of film genres.
The font size of the film title is meant to be much larger than previous titles in the teaser
trailer. From my research, it is clear that my increasing the size of the film title then it will
provide a bigger impact on the audience. This idea is also relevant with the style and font
of the film title.By changing the style and font of the title, makes a bigger impression on the
audience in comparison to the narrative fonts.
setting/location-
costumes and props- For our genre, (detective thriller) the most popular choice of clothing
was a combination of smart causal clothing, consisting of jeans, shirt and coat for the men
and similar for the female characters. I can see from our analysis the film “prisoners” that
the clothing used for the main characters matched our idea of our film. Our film and
Prisoners have both been shot recently, meaning the style of clothing was similar as well.
But even similar films dating back to the late 80s such as “The silence of the Lamb”, main
characters such as Hannibal and the female detective wear clothing that are similar to
what aimed for. However Hannibal wears a very basic prison one piece. This may have
been done to distinguish the difference the protagonist and antagonist characters in the
film.
The props used for this genre are usually representative of the types of characters that are
being portrayed. For example, in the film prisoner, the main character (the father of the
missing child) is seen with a gun. This object represents power and aggressiveness which
is appropriate for this character as it shows his desperation to find his child. In our film we
didn't use any props that helped with supporting the main characters image, we did this
instead using the clothing for each character by sculpting their image to match there
personality.
Camerawork- For detective thriller films, the use of the camera work, especially in the past
10 years, is distinct and unique to other genres. From analysing films such as “The silence
of the Lambs’, “Prisoner” there is huge emphasis on close up shots on main characters,
especially between conversations. The idea behind the dominance of close up shots in
detective thriller films is to provide and sense of tension without the audience noticing. We
