SEBI is the regulator for securities markets in India. It was established in 1988 and acquired statutory powers in 1992 via the SEBI Act. SEBI is headquartered in Mumbai and has regional offices across India. It is chaired by C.B. Bhave and has a board consisting of government officials and independent members. SEBI works to protect investors, ensure orderly development of the securities market, and regulate market intermediaries. It performs legislative, executive and judicial functions. SEBI has taken steps to modernize markets and responded effectively to the 2008 global financial crisis and the Satyam scandal.
