- 1. Month: NOVEMBER 2010 Virtue: SELF-CONTROL I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the activity, the kids are expected to: 1. Define and understand the meaning of self-control and the lack of it 2. Follow the examples of Jesus on self-control and apply it in their daily lives 3. Practice self-control through the activities prepared for them II. MATERIALS CD and CD player Lyrics of Every Move I make and other Kids Praise Copy of KFL Habits in a manila paper Game – Who made you move: Drums or any object you can use as drum Game – Arrange the letters: Cut-out letters of E, V, A, D, M, C, I, N, O, S, J, H (bond paper size) Storytelling: Laptop and LCD Projector Activity for JK: coloring materials and Printed drawings (one drawing per kid) Activity for SK: Pens, 5 different colors of board paper (1/4 size) with holes on it (shapes can vary), string III. MEMORY BIBLE VERSE: “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” – Proverbs 25:28 IV. PROGRAM 1. Gather the kids with any Kids Praise song. 2. Teach the Kids Praise song of the month. Nana-nanana-nana Nana-nanana-nana Nana-nanana-nana Nana-nanana-nana 3. Ask a kid to lead the opening prayer and end it with Glory be. WHAT IS SELF-CONTROL? A. Intro Game: Who made you move? Ask the kids to form a big circle. The facilitator should stay at the middle. Instruct the kids that when they hear the drum beat, they have to shake the specific body part you will tell them to. When the drum stops, the kids should stop shaking the specific body part. They can only move until they hear the sound of the drums beating again. You can vary the speed of the sound of the drum or the body part to be shaken. B. Definition: Self-Control is… Self-control is when we are in charge of what we do and what we say. It is about thinking before doing the act. We use self-control to listen and follow directions, just like in the game. We were asked to shake a specific body part when the drum was beating and to stop if it also stops. It is not the drum or the facilitator who made you move. You were able to move because we listened to the directions, and therefore acted on it. Self-control helps us stay safe, be successful and create peace around us. Example of Self-Control are speaking kindness towards someone you may not like, not gossiping, not complaining, using your time wisely, making healthy food choices, not hitting someone or getting in fights, etc. When you don’t have self-control, you tend to do harmful acts to yourself and to others. WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE SELF-CONTROL, THIS WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU! Game: Arrange the letters The participants will be grouped with equal number of Junior and Senior kids Each group will be given a set of letters: E, V, A, D, M, C, I, N, O, S, J, H The speaker/facilitator will ask read descriptions about different bible characters who failed to practice self-control.
- 3. The goal of the game is to arrange the letters to form the name of the bible character being described. Questions: a. Who lacked self-control by eating a piece of fruit, even though God had commanded against it? (Eve) b. Who lacked self-control by giving into peer pressure and ate a piece of fruit also? (Adam) c. Who lacked self-control by letting jealousy control him and killing his brother Abel? (Cain) d. Who lacked self-control by letting anger eat him and lost his privilege to enter the Promise Land? (Moses) e. Who lacked self-control by running away from God because he doesn’t want to go to Nineveh and was eaten by a big fish? (Jonah) BEST EXAMPLE OF SELF-CONTROL A. Storytelling: The Temptation of Jesus (Mt.4:1-11) Ask the students if they have ever gone a meal without food? A day? Have them imagine 40. Tell them that in our story today, Jesus has gone 40 days and 40 nights without food. Ask them to imagine what Jesus would have felt like. (Weak, tired, dizzy, confused maybe) Explain that Satan is going to try to get Jesus to sin. He tempts Him when He is weak. He tempts us when we’re weak too. Tell the story through Video, Skit, Puppet or Picture Story. B. Input / Processing In the story, Satan tried to tempt Jesus to sin because He was weak. Satan asked Jesus to do things for Him thrice: - First Temptation: Stones to become bread – sin of Physical Desire. Satan knows that Jesus was fasting for 40 days and surely He was very hungry! But Satan’s primary objective is to taunt Jesus to show off His being a Son of God by turning the stones to bread. Jesus knew that he could do it, yet he chose to resist this physical urge. He knew that obedience to God was more important than the comforts of material things. Physical needs must be met in God’s way, and in God’s time, not by our own selfish shortcuts. We are tempted to go for the quick fix for all of our physical hungers rather than to wait on God and seek to do things his way. - Second temptation: Throwing himself to the ground – sin of Pride. Satan taunted Jesus to throw himself to the ground because the angels will surely catch him. Satan knew that when Jesus do this, people will see him as someone special and can have instant fame. But Jesus knew better. It is an issue between Humility and Pride. Even if He knew that the angels will save Him, He didn’t do it. He refused to manipulate God by forcing His hand. - Third Temptation: Bow down and worship Satan – sin of greed and power. Satan showed all the kingdoms of the world at the moment and taunted Jesus that He could have it all if He will decide to bow down and worship him. It means submitting to him and all his ways. But Jesus is the Son of God and He obeys no one but only His Father.
- 4. Jesus has showed us the best example of self-control during the time that he is weak, tired and hungry. He knew very well, that if He gives in to Satan’s offer, He will disobey God, the Father, and also commits sins that will definitely damage himself. Jesus’ repeated response to Satan is always based on the Scriptures – “It is written”. He knew the Word of God and used it to fight him! The Scripture is the best tool on fighting temptation and helps us to have self-control. As a KFL, we are asked by Jesus to have self-control like Him. He asks us to be discipline in our studies, in our lifestyle, the way we interact with other people. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to grant us grace in having discipline and self-control over ourselves, most especially on those difficult times that we will face. ART ACTIVITY: For Junior Kids: Jesus in the Desert 1. Distribute the drawings and crayons to each kid. 2. Ask the kids to color the drawing of Jesus in the desert. After they finished, ask them to write at the bottom “Jesus in the Desert: Mt. 4:1-11” as the title of their art work. 3. Tell the children to place these somewhere at home where they can see them frequently to be reminded of how Jesus practiced self-control in the desert. Note: It is best to show a model/sample for kids to imitate For Senior Kids: My guide to holiness 1. Distribute the materials to each kid. 2. On top of each card, the kids should write: IF I DO THIS… (Kapag ginawa ko ito…) 3. Ask the kids to write the following in each card / paper: Will I be disobeying someone God has placed over me? (Susunod ba ako sa nakakatanda sa akin?) Will I harm my body? (Makakasama ba ito sa aking sarili?) Will I hurt someone else? (Makakasakit ba ako sa ibang tao?) Will I be glad about it tomorrow? (Magiging masaya ba ako?) Would Jesus be pleased if He were standing beside me? (Matutuwa ba si Hesus?) 4. When finished, insert the cards to the string. 5. Tell the children to place these somewhere at home where they can see them frequently and use these as a guide for making decisions in their lives. *sample of My guide to holiness string IF I DO THIS…
- 5. Closing: 1. Allow the students to memorize the bible verse for the month. Empower the kids to practice self-control in their daily lives and always remember Jesus as the best example of it. 2. Lead them into a prayer about having self-control. Then guide them into reciting the KFL Habits: • I will imitate Jesus. a. I will pray to God every day. b. I will make Jesus as my role model. c. I will read the Bible • I will be a good family member. a. I will be a good son/daughter to my parents. b. I will be a good sister/brother to my siblings by loving and respecting them. • I will be a good student a. I will do my homework, school work diligently b. I will be a good student by respecting my teacher, class officers and school authority c. I will obey the rules and regulations of the classroom and the school d. I will be an active member of the Church through CFC-KFL. • I will serve in our Parish Church a. I will be an active member of the Church through CFC-KFL. b. I will always attend and participate in all the CFC-KFL activities c. I will share my time, talents and treasures to others especially my brothers and sisters in CFC-KFL. d. I will love, respect and be loyal to my CFC-KFL family • I will tell others about Jesus a. I will love my brothers and sisters, relatives, and friends by doing good deeds everyday that will reflect God's love b. I will love the poor by sharing what I have to them c. I will take care of the environment by throwing my trash properly and by learning ways to protect God's creation. 3. Distribute the letter to Parents for the follow-up in their homes.
