This document discusses self-healing optical access networks. It presents an issue with current optical access networks where a failure can disrupt service. The existing solution involves failure monitoring, fault localization, and triggering network protection to resume service. The proposed solution is a self-healing optical access network (SHOAN) that uses a distributed architecture and message passing between nodes to autonomously localize and repair failures without disrupting service. The SHOAN provides faster recovery times and is compatible with existing optical network architectures.
