Sentence, phrase
and clause
Sentence
A group of words which make complete sense
is a sentence.
Read these:
• blue sky the is today
• Is today blue is sky the
• The sky is blue today.
Examples:
• Ravi loved frogs.
• Ramu Kaka grew flowers and vegetables in the
garden.
• I made a list of groceries.
• Mother baked a cake yesterday.
• Father took us to the park which is near our house.
• Let’s play scrabble when you are free.
• When shall we meet?

Clause:
A group of words
that contains a
subject and a verb
and is used as part
of a sentence or a
sentence by itself.
Examples:
I want some cereal.
Marie likes cats.
Joseph is a good soccer player.
She cried because her seashell was broken.
Whoever ate the last piece of cake owes me!
The bag that someone left on the bus belongs
to Mrs. Smith.
