Setting a Course As a District As a  full staff As a Department With students and parents Pulling it all together as one We want to be more than independent contractors sharing a parking lot
A Big Question Who owns the learning? Marco Torres
Big Ideas Use evidence about learning to adopt instruction to meet learner needs Make sure that we focus on megacognition so the learner figures out how to self-coach
It is about taking chances and trying new things
Making a Commitment Must be willing to do things differently Participate in related Pro-D Assist in developing resources Treat professionals like Professionals
My Personal Learning Exploration Giving up some control Experimenting with tech / social tools like: SharePoint  Youtube  Blogging  MSN /Skype  Del.icio.us iPods  Cell Phones and Smartphones
 
Reasons Not To Change Ministry of Education Administration Curriculum Dated Technology Fraser Institute People are not “Onside”
Clear about what we are not doing No Special Programs Doing things for the wrong reasons Micromanagement Taking ourselves too seriously Having “THE ANSWER”
The logic change If we are shifting from a sorting system to a learning system, we as leaders and educators need to know more about learning and especially about motivation. We need to meet kids where the are
Your Turn What are you passionate about? 3 - 2 - 1 3  key strengths of the school / district 2  areas that should be a focus for school / district 1  area that you have been thinking about focusing on
Focusing in on some bold steps Moving a high achieving school forward: Big ideas that emerged at your tables Post these ideas around the room Indicate which 3 resonate most with you
