Mrs. Nancy Arribas, who is a seasoned teacher with over 20 years experience, and is
currently teaching second grade. She is very organized, clear and thorough; always
teaching her students to strive for excellence.
Devon Aire has departmentalized the second grade classrooms; Mrs. Arribas is
responsible for two groups of 18 students, to whom she teaches Math, Social Studies
and Spanish during the morning session. Those students then switch class midday
and receive instruction from another teacher in the subjects of Science, Reading and
Language Arts.
The schools’ classrooms are interconnecting pods of four, which enable the teacher to
communicate with colleagues. Mrs. Arribas has desks in her classroom arranged in
groups that vary in size between four and five students. The desks during tests spread
out into individual rows.
The observations conducted occurred during Mrs. Arribas' morning session. The
constitution of the morning students are as follows; ten boys and eight girls. The ethnic
makeup of her class is 95% Hispanic and 5% white. The classroom features a smart
board and several computers that are available for students to use.
The observations took place January 28th, 29th, and 31st, 2014 and also February
3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2014. On the aforementioned dates, I observed lessons and
assessments in the morning session that encompassed all three subjects, all lessons
adhering to the Florida Educator Accomplish Practices or “FEAPs."

In this project, students were
required to create posters showing
their backgrounds through
illustrations and written word.
Students then presented and
shared about
themselves, promoting a
multicultural learning environment.
This assignment directly
incorporates the following FEAPS;
The Learning Environment (d)

cultural, linguistic, and family

Instructional Design and Lesson

On this day, students used manipulatives to review using money and telling time. Mrs.
Arribas combined worksheets, books, the Smart board, sets of coins, and clocks to
teach those skills. After the lesson was observed, I assisted with the preparation of
packets to be utilized the next day.
This lesson correlates with the following FEAPs; Instructional Design and Lesson
Planning, (b) Sequences lessons and concepts to ensure coherence and required
prior knowledge; (e) Uses a variety of data, independently, and in collaboration with
colleague, to evaluate learning outcomes, adjust planning and continuously improve
the effectiveness of the lessons.
The Learning Environment (a) Organizes allocates and manages the resources of
time, space and attention. Instructional Delivery and Facilitation(b) Deepen and enrich
students’ understanding through content area literacy strategies, verbalization of
thought, and application of the subject matter. Mrs. Arribas also incorporates role
playing into the lessons. This practice enables students to learn skill sets in class and
rehearse applying them to real world situations.
January 31st, 2014
After Mrs. Arribas had used the Smart
Board to review the homework from
the previous day, students took a unit
test. The opportunity was given to
assist in grading the assessment. Mrs.
Arribas then analyzed the results. She
noticed some students continued to
have trouble with the material. She
returned the graded tests to students
as homework, so that those questions
that were incorrect could be reviewed
and corrected. Lastly, she introduced
the new lesson using shapes.
The Learning Environment, (c)
Conveys high expectations to all
students and (i) Utilizes current and
emerging assistive technologies that
enable students to participate in high-
quality communication interactions
and achieve their educational goals.
Mrs. Arribas teaches her students Spanish. In maintaining a
diverse and multilingual classroom, she assigned her students to
write about each’s traditions and heritage. She created this board
so that the students can view the works of their peers and learn
about the different backgrounds that make each one unique.
February 3rd, 2014
Mrs. Arribas assigns each student a “job." These jobs give
each student responsibility and participation, helping the
classroom run smoothly with minimal interruptions. Mrs.
Arribas is very organized and prepared. Her students are
well behaved and continually engaged in learning. Devon
Aire is a wonderful school with many resources that are
available to the students. In the future, I look forward to
being assigned to Mrs. Arribas. I feel that she loves her
profession and there is a lot that, as a future educator, she
can teach me.
