Examples:
Aicaa thinks she is pretty.
Dennis rides his bike every day.
1. Singular subjects requires
singular verbs.
Example:
The family prays the rosary every night.
The majority has rejected the
reproductive health bill.
1a. Collective Nouns taken as
a unit
Example:
The sand tickles my toes.
Cassava flour makes the pastry flaky.
1b. Mass Nouns- words that can't be
counted.
Example:
Everybody helps to make this
event a success.
Nobody knows the number
combination of this vault except the manager.
1c. Indefinite Pronouns considered as
singular.
Examples:
Two thirds of the salad was served to the
guests.
Two cups of milk is needed for this recipe.
Thirty percent of our income goes to taxes.
1d. Measurements, Fractions and
Percentage are considered singular.
Examples:
They ride the school bus ion the afternoon.
Marbles are sold by packs of fifties.
2. Plural Subjects requires
Plural verb.
Examples:
None of us want to dine in that restaurant.
All of the girls are preparing for the
foundation day.
2a. Indefinite Pronouns when they refer
to count nouns. Most, All, None, Some)
Examples:
One half of the pies have been sold.
Five kilos of rice are packaged to be given to flood vic
tims.
Five percent of the boys are absent due to influenza.
2b. Fractions of quantity, Quantities, sums
of the money taken individually and
Percentage of counts
nouns.
Examples:
Helen and Robert are getting married
this December.
In the piano, ivory and ebony get together in
Perfect harmony.
3. Singular subjects connected by "and"
require a plural verb.
Example:
Every bush and tree in the orchard receives an appropriate
amount of fertilizer.
Each chair and table has been painted with pastel
colors.
Many a grass and shrub gets trampled by rushing feet.
3a. Singular subjects connected by "and" but are
preceded by EACH, EVERY and MANY A take on
a singular verb.
Examples:
Rice and fish is the standard Filipino meal.
Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional meal
in Ireland.
3b. Food considered as a unit take on a
singular verb.
Examples:
Eight and five makes thirteen.
Twelve and thirteen equals twenty five.
3c. Numbers when added together take
on a singular verb.
Examples:
James or Johann has reported the accident
to the manager.
Neither rain nor snow slows the letter carrier.
4. Singular subjects connected by or, nor,
neither/nor, either/or, not only/but also
require singular verb.
Examples:
Neither Seint nor his parents were notified of the
loss.
Not star but planets are visible on a night
like this.
5. Subjects connected by or, nor, neither/nor,
either/or, not only/but also have different quantity of
subject, the verb agrees to the nearest subject.
Examples:
Here comes the bride.
There come the bride and her entourage.
6. Inverted sentences start with HERE
and THERE comes before the subject.
Examples:
Yasmin, and not the boys, is making a
presentation for our project.
The boys, not Yasmin are making
a presentation for our project.
7. Compound subjects in which one is used
positively and the other negatively, will have the verb
agreeing with the subject used positively.
Examples:
The chassis of your car needs treatment
against rust.
The abscess in your leg has accumulated
a lot of pus.
8. Words that are plural in form but singular
in meaning take on a singular verbs.
Examples:
Tactics 102 is taught during Third Year in PMA.
Military tactics teach a soldier to penetrate
the mind of the enemy. (tactics means strategies)
9. Words ending in –ICS are singular in
meaning if they refer to a subject, branch of
science.
Examples:
The Three Musketeers was written
by Alexander Dumas.
The Three Stooges stars Charlie Chaplin.
10. Titles of books, essays, movies, plays, musical
compositions, paintings or other such works, that
are plural in form, take a singular verb.
Examples:
The United Nations has sent peacekeeping forc
es to Iraq.
The Netherlands is a land of dikes.
11. Names of groups, organizations or
countries that are plural in form, take a
singular form.
Examples:
The number of high school graduates opting to take up
nursing has grown to enormous proportions.
A number of students have chosen nursing as
a career because it's the fastest way to go abroad.
12. The expression "the number" takes on a
singular verb while "a number" takes on a
plural verb.
Examples:
Telling lies does not improve one's character
at all.
Running is a good exercise.
13. A subject based on verbal nouns
(gerund) is treated as singular.
Examples:
The Residences offers condominium units
of your choice at affordable prices.
The Jaycees holds "The Search for Ten Outstanding
Young Men" every year.
14. Business names, companies, names of
organizations may take a plural form but they will
take the singular form because they refer to only
one entity.
Examples:
This memo needs the signature of the manager.
That house requires extensive renovations.
These books belong to Jesse.
Those clothes need drastic alterations.
15. Demonstrative pronouns depend on
the subject.
Select the verb that agrees with the subject.
1. Red beans and rice is/are my mom's favorite dish.
2. The Burbs is/are a movie starring Tom Hanks.
3. ¼ of the water was/were given to the community.
4. It is the pants she wear/wears today.
5. Most from the class need/needs parental guidance.
6. Neither my mom nor my brothers is/are going to the church.
7. The number of supporters grow/ grows tremendously.
8. Four and fifteen has been/ have been my favorite numbers since I was a kid.
9. This/these bags is/are from Aunt Amy.
10. Calvin and Mike sing/sings together.
