This document discusses the importance of formative assessment and using learning progressions to guide instruction and identify students' current understanding. It also discusses research on argumentative writing and the importance of considering audience when teaching these skills. Several key points are made: effective formative assessment maps students' learning and helps teachers guide them; research shows the value of teaching students to become better reviewers and revisers of writing; there may be no single definition of "argumentative writing" as writers argue and persuade in many contexts; and teaching argument needs to consider the audience's beliefs and community in order to shape understanding and change beliefs.
