Steel Drums
The steel drum has its origin in West Africa where people played drums
with skin (0) but various materials. These traditional drums (9) are
brought to Trinidad and Tobago during the 19th century and played
during carnivals. The steel drum is (10) make from an empty 55-gallon
oil drum. The cylindrical part of the drum is cut off, formed into a bowl,
and then tuned. Finally, the drum may be (11) paint or plated with
chrome. The drums feature (12) the variety of surfaces which are
divided in the drum to produce different sounds. The (13) large the
gong, the lower the tone. The (14) drum are typically used to play
calypso music, Latin, and Jazz Fusion. The players are called pannists (15)
but they normally play in bands with 4 to 100 performers. Playing the
steel drum is not that difficult. Some sources say it (16) take about 20
hours to learn. They can also be played without any knowledge of music.

Teaching of Life Skills
Nowadays, there are many schools that include the teaching of life skills, on top of the common
subjects like English and Mathematics. Some people are of the opinion that teaching life skills help to
equip students with skills needed in the real world, while there are others who feel that it is a waste of
time.
Personally, I believe that schools should prepare students for adult life. Financial Knowledge such as
budget planning and saving money are important to avoid falling into debt. It would also be a good idea
to learn basic cooking, as it is fundamental for their survival.
On the other hand, there are people who argue against the idea because of time factor. They believe that
if students are taught life skills, they would not have enough time for learning other subjects. In
addition, both teachers and students will lose focus on the most important subjects and spend too much
time on teaching life skills.
In conclusion, life skills should not be taught as a subject. For example, the teaching of financial skills
can be included during the teaching of Mathematics. In doing so, we can kill two birds with one stone.
Read the information below and answer questions 25 to 34.
Questions 25 to 32
Write no more than five words and / or a number from the text for each of the answer. For each of

7
Our Brain
There’s a mass of wrinkly material in our head, weighing around 1.3kg, which controls every
single thing you will ever do. It enables us to think, learn, create and feel emotions, as well as
controlling every blink, breath and heartbeat. This fantastic organ is your brain! It’s so amazing
that famous scientist James D. Watson once called the brain “the most complex thing we have
yet discovered in our universe.” Here’s why!
Our brains contain about 100 billion microscopic cells called neurons. There are so many, it
would take you over 3,000 years to count them all! Incredibly, the activity in our brain never
stops. Countless messages zip around inside it every second – just like a supercharged
pinball machine. Our neurons create and send more messages than all the phones in the
entire world. And while a single neuron generates only a very small amount of electricity, all
your neurons together can produce enough energy to power a low-wattage light bulb. Imagine
that!
A bee lands on our bare foot. Eek! Sensory neurons in your skin relay this information to our
spinal cord and brain at a speed of more than 240 kmph. Our brain then uses motor neurons
to transmit the message back through our spinal cord to our foot – to shake the bee off
quickly! Motor neurons can relay this message at more than 320 kmph. Wow!
Riding a bicycle seems impossible at first, but soon you master it. How? As we practise, our
brain sends ‘bicycle riding’ messages along pathways of neurons again and again, forming
new connections. In fact, the structure of our brain changes every time you learn, as well as
whenever we have a new thought or memory. Now that’s clever!
It’s well known that any exercise that makes our heart beat faster – like running or playing a
sport – is great for our body and can even help improve our mood. But scientists have recently
learned that for a period of time after we’ve exercised, our body produces a chemical that
makes our brain more willing to learn. So, if we’re stuck on some tricky homework, go out and
run around for a while, then tackle the problem again. We might discover that we’re much
more able to solve it!

You are going to read about Coral Reefs.
Six sentences have been removed from the text. Choose from the sentences (A -H) to fill in each gap

CORAL REEFS
Coral reefs provide an important ecosystem for life underwater, protect coastal areas by
reducing the power of waves hitting the coast. These natural barriers help prevent loss of life,
protect property – such as homes, ports and marinas – and guard against shoreline erosion.
Living corals make a skeleton underneath themselves, which are homes to marine like
sponges, clams and snails.
Ocean corals support entire marine food-chains, which depend on them for survival because they
are a valuable source of nutrients and nitrogen. Finally, corals recycle matter and
nutrients from broken-down elements, generating new life from old.
But such ecosystems are delicately balanced and easily disrupted. Colourful coral formations are
highly sensitive to changes in water temperature, light conditions or nutrients. Stressed
coral turns white, leaving it vulnerable to disease, and if the algae loss occurs over a lengthy
period, the reef could eventually die. Climate change makes extreme storms and mass
bleaching more frequent and more severe, turning some once-flourishing marine environments
into underwater deserts.
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has declined by 50% since 1985, due to storm damage and coral
bleaching. Warming of ocean waters prevent the formation of a healthy reef ecosystem.
If nothing is done, they could disappear completely by mid-century.
A It is predicted that more than half of Earth’s reefs could be under threat by 2030.
B They also absorb and store harmful pollutants, such as carbon, in the same way trees
remove CO2 emissions from the atmosphere.
C They will also eject the algae that live and feed on them – a phenomenon known as
bleaching.
D When coral dies, there is a domino effect that disrupts the marine life that lives on, in
or around it.
E Although they look more like plants or rocks, corals are animals that are essential for
the planet.
F These smaller organisms attract bigger fish looking for food, which in turn fall prey
to even bigger fish and marine mammals.
G More than 500 million people worldwide depend on reefs for food, jobs and coastal
defence.
H When the algae disappear, creatures further up the food chain disappear, too.
