Setting is both time and placeThat means location or place and time of day or year or seasonE.g. a beach at lunchtime (fun)  is a different setting to a beach at midnight ( romantic)
Setting can refer to internal locationsE.g. inside a car, a house or office or building like a school or churchSetting can also be externalE.g. in the garden, at the beach, on a mountain etc
Settings are constructed in novels through a variety of techniques:A character tells us or describes it“ I shivered as the cold wind blew across the garden and through my coat”Or the author /narrator tells us:“The garden was covered in snow as winter set in.”Find an example of each of these in the first three chapters of your novel
Setting can be literal or metaphorical/symbolicLiteral:This is a room with desks and chairsMetaphoricalThis is a place for education and learningFind a literal and metaphorical setting in the first three chapters of your novel tell your friend.
Settings can help to construct characters:Some characters are set in a particular setting:“Cinderella cried as she scrubbed the kitchen floor”Or some characters are mobile,“The fairy Godmother was busy tonight as she visited Cinderella, the palace and the other fairies.”  What does this tell us ? She is busy and important.
Setting can help to construct themes:E.g. “the crowd roared in the arena as Britain won the World Cup”Theme= VictoryFind a setting in your novel that helps construct a theme
