SETTING UPAN IUI LAB
Dr. RAHUL SEN PhD.
Consultant Embryologist
NEELKANTH FERTILITY HOSPITAL
JAIPUR
INTRODUCTION
• With the development of new techniques and procedures to
treat infertility, the perceptions and concerns of the medical
fraternity and public has evolved enormously.
• Setting up an ideal laboratory is the key to success in A.R.T.
• Before developing the basic design you know anticipated work
load, local building, practise permits and environmental factor’s.
• Every lab has its own unique features, any architect can design a
room but you must understand the type of work to be done.
• There are a number of ways to set up and
operate a successful assisted reproduction
technology (ART) Unit.
• Facilities in ART ranges from minimal to fully
equipped with additional space dedicated to
clinical care & research.
• There are many factors that go into making of a
good ART laboratory.
• HOW TO SETUP?
• WHEN, WHERE TO SETUP?
• IS THERE ANY GUIDELINE?
• WHAT ARE RECOMMENDATIONS ?

Requirements for ART clinic- 2010 draft
• Space/ Location
• Non-sterile area
• Sterile area
• Proper Staffing Norms - TEAM
• Registration and Accreditation
Space
• A well designed ART clinic have a non-sterile and a strictly sterile area.
• Any space within the setup do no compromise with the quality of service.
• The guidelines do not specify the minimum areas required for each
purpose BUT it should be hassle-free and errorless.

• That involves the use and creation of embryos outside the
body.
• The processing/storage of gametes or embryos.
• Research based activities.
levels of Infertility Clinic
(depending on their level of expertise).
• Level 1 (primary) infertility care units.
• Level 2 (secondary) infertility care units.
• Level 3 (tertiary) infertility care units.
Level 1 (primary) infertility care units.
• Investigation for cause of infertility.
• Treatment of minor anatomical defects.
• Detection and treatment of reproductive tract infections.
• Assessment of follicular growth and ovulation by USG.
• Cannot carry handling of gametes outside the body.
Level 2 (secondary) infertility care units.
Facilities for investigation of -
• Immunological tests for infertility.
• Semen analysis & Sperm function tests.
• Assessment of follicular growth and ovulation by TVS.
• Hysteroscopy, laparoscopy and TVS.
• Provision for semen collection, processing and
insemination for IUI.
Level 3 (tertiary) infertility care units.
Diagnostic procedures for male infertility
• Endocrine, hormone and blood related assays
• Detailed tests for sperm function and integrity analysis like using CASA.
Diagnostic procedures for female infertility
• Endocrine, hormone, blood & infertility related assays.
• Transvaginal sonography.
• Karyotyping
Therapeutic procedures
• Induction of ovulation
• All types of ART including ICSI
• Cryopreservation gametes and embryos
Requirements for IUI laboratory
• Equipment's
• Disposables
• Culture media
• Trained Professionals
Equipment's
• Imaging system- microscope.
• Controlled temperature system – warmers.
• Separation system - Centrifuge.
• Clean air system- Laminar air flow, room HEPA
filters.
Disposables
• The choice of plastic-ware plays a major role.
• Check sterility of plastic wares.
• Be user friendly with whatever disposable being used.
Culture media
• It is a medium which is required for growth and survival for
specific type of cell.
• Gametes have their own specific type of culture media to
remain viable in vitro.
• They widely vary in form of ingredients and technique of use.

Setting up a new unit is very much an
art, as is the practice of ART itself.
not recommend to be built by
administrators, engineers, or
architects
without considerable input from
experienced Infertility specialists &
Embryologists.

supports it “
