Shalom Academy Life at its best Inauguration on August 1, 2007 Helping Little Stars Find Their Light! www.ShalomAcademy.org
Introduction Today's children are tomorrow’s generation. Children saved today are a generation saved for tomorrow. Anyone who has been in India knows the plight of countless children on the streets, shops and orphanages. Even an economically, spiritually and culturally strong country like India faces the enormous challenge of bringing up children for the next generation. Sometimes great minds end up in the hands of traders and traitors for money and power. Those with normal physical and mental health never grow up to realize their full potential due to lack of a loving environment that encourages them to learn, aspire, achieve and share. It is even worse for parentless kids, kids whose parents are in prison and kids whose parents are terminally ill . Given an opportunity many such kids would want to lead an alternative way of life, however rarely do such circumstances occur in their life. Many children who were raised in an orphanage feel rather deprived in life as opposed to others. Shalom Academy is dedicated to providing a stable, safe and nurturing ‘Home for Children’, enabling them to grow personally and professionally as caring human beings as well as productive and responsible citizens. Most of these kids have guardians, foster parents, sometimes institutions who do not have the minimum resources to provide even their basic needs, some have been deserted by them after a while. We wish to meet the needs of at least a few such children who need our services most – children who do not have their parents to take care of them, and whose guardians are economically deprived . For this purpose Shalom Academy has been formed as a non governmental, non-profit organization, and registered as a society. It is our heartfelt desire that every child gets the opportunity to lead life at its best.

FAQ A. Is this an orphanage or School? Why is it called Academy? Socially there is a negative association to the word orphanage, and when someone says he/she has stayed/studied in an orphanage, they were considered poor, unfortunate, helpless, sometimes underprivileged which also affects the child psychologically. Hence it was decided to call it as an ACADEMY which serves as place for stay and nurture successful persons. B. Will this Academy accept boys or girls? It can accommodate both boys and girls C. Who manages this organisation? Founded and presided by : Michael Stalin and close family Operated on location by: Friends with prior experience in working in charitable organization like this who are committed to Vision and objective of this organization. Governed by : Board Of Directors who are a group of similar minded friends well acquainted with community needs who are business owners, professionals and NRIs. D. Where does help come from? Friends and Family - Patrons E. Will the students intake be based on Religion or Region? No F. Why does the cost per child is too high compare to other orphanages? The objective is to ensure that the children in this academy have access to appropriate level of resources that would give them the same kind of advantage that our own children have. If your parents have not invested much in your life, do you think you would have come up in life as you are today?
FAQ G. Why do you have to spend a lot on few children, while you can support more children? There are many orphanages who are meeting the needs of more children with less resource. Shalom Academy is dedicated to limit the intake of students based on committed resources. The more resources we have the more children will be trained. We believe that by ensuring a higher basic standard of resource per child, the impact on change per life at a time would be greater than attempting mass intake and leaving them with marks on their soul as under privileged class of society. H. How can I support this organization? Support can be in any form : Operational guidance, Spiritual support through prayers or sponsorships. Please feel free to contact us even if it is to let us know your opinions. I. Is this organization a Society or Trust? And where is it registered? This is registered as a Society in Trichy (Tamilnadu, India). J. How far has the operation progressed? Building is structurally complete to cater to the need of the children. Furnishings are yet to be done. Started receiving application for potential candidates. Decision will be made by end of May 2007 K. Can we give suggestions for the operation of the Academy? Yes, the academy looks forward to positive inputs that would help in maintaining the core objective.
FAQ L. Do all staff stay in the premises? No, only essential personnel would stay in premises. M. How do you propose to instill family values? By creating family units. A certain number of children would be cared for by a ‘Foster Mother’ (eg:one ‘Mother’ for 5 children), and the children would address all staff of the home using family relational titles rather than official titles. This would promote family bonding and sibling support. N. Can we suggest a child who is in need of home? What are the conditions and the process to apply for the child intake? Yes and the Academy admission Criteria are to be met. Please send the details in writing. O. How long does the candidate get to stay in the Academy? Until they move out on job/higher studies/marriage etc P. During their higher studies are they considered to be part of Academy’s students? Yes Q. What are some of the conditions that limit the intake of children? Currently the Academy does not have the resource to cater to a child that requires continuous Special Medical Attention. God willing in future, this academy would be in a position to cater to special needs children as well. R. What is the intake age limit ? Between 3 and 7. If the child is above this limit, please contact the academy for admission details. S. What are the legal aspects of child’s admission ? Each admission would be legally cleared by the legal advisor along with the consent of the child’s local guardian.
