INTRODUCE OF ‘SHERLOCK’
SHERLOCK is a British television crime drama. It change from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s
Sherlock Holmes detective stories. It has three seasons, every season have 3 parts of it. Steven
Moffatt and Mark Gaits created this television drama, It stars Benedict Cumber batch as
Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. The director of this television
drama is Paul McGeehan and Euros Lyn, and the language of it is English. This television
drama is made from Harts wood Films, Harts wood Films produced the series for the BBC
and co-produced it with WGBH Boston for its Masterpiece anthology series on PBS. The first
season broadcast in 2010, the second season broadcast in 2012 and May of 2012, Sherlock
broadcast in American. The third season broadcast in 2014, after it broadcast, Sherlock is the
most watched drama series, also Sherlock has been sold to over 200 territories. All of the series
have been released on DVD and Blu-ray, also it tie-in editions of selected original Conan
Doyle stories and original soundtrack composed by David Arnold and Michael Price. And this
television drama have been got many prize, for example: BAFTAS, Emmis and Golden globe.
When January of 2014, the company of them designed a mobile phone games about it. Many

It always take place in a well-known city/capital.(Seen as a dangerous place.
In Sherlock, it is in capital city of UK, which is London, in 221B Baker Street.
Because usually the capital city is has high crime rate, and most people know
where it is.
There is always a person who is the detective in the film is really clever can
solve nearly all the crimes. In Sherlock, this person is Sherlock. There also
have a person who is helping the main characters to solve those crimes and
this person in Sherlock called ‘Watson’.
In this type of films, character always wear dark colour, like: black. In
Sherlock, you can see Sherlock always wear long black coat and scarf.
In this type of films, always have some guns, polices, police cars, newspaper
and blood as well. In Sherlock, there have these things in that film.

There have lots of extreme close-up and close-up, and the camera
usually follows the character who is solving the crime, which is Sherlock
in Sherlock. You can see the characters and the murderer’s face clearly.
And when Sherlock is thinking, you can see all the movement on him.
The light always very dark in these type of films, just have several light on,
and even sometimes the place without light. In Sherlock, the place that cabbie
took Sherlock, there was really dark, and the flat in London, 221B Barker
street, that room always dark as well.
In these type of films, when it has some important things happen, the climax,
or someone dead, it will have the mood music in the background. For example,
when someone dead in Sherlock, there are some music make people very scare.
In these types of films, usually the narrative have to solve the crime, at the
end of the series the crime will solve, and the murderer usually is punished. In
Sherlock, Sherlock need to find out the murder, at the end of it, Sherlock found
out the murderer who is ‘Moriarty’, and keep audience want to watch next section.

 Setting: This picture is took place in a college, it is a science class room. It got many
big windows behind them, so, someone can see what is happening inside. That can help
someone else to save him. And, they took place in college, because when the evening, no
one will be there, the murderer can hide himself really well and kill people easily, the
police hard to find out where is it.
 Lighting: That was really dark at there, just several light on in the middle and dark
around them. That can make people feeling dangerous, and maybe some bad thing will
happen next. So dark display this is horrible and dangerous.
 Characters: There was just two persons, who are Sherlock and the murderer the
cabbie. That can make people feel afraid of what will happen next and worry about the
Sherlock, because that is one to one, no one can help Sherlock, that is a fair fight.

 Costume: Sherlock wear what he always wear, the long black coat and black scarf, that
can make him look very strong and powerful. The murderer the cabbie wears very plain, just
like a normal person, like a taxi driver, it can help the murderer hide himself very well, police
will really hard to find him.
 Camerawork: This is full view. So we can see all the view of this place. Then
audiences can see what happening and felling horrible. And this is a long shot, we can
see the whole of the scene clearly, then we can know that is the environment look like.
 Sound: There are some mood music that can only be heard by audience. It can make
people feeling dangerous and scared. And at that school, we cannot hear about any city sound,
very quiet up there, that’s display do not have any person there, very far from the centre of
city, very out-of-the-way, it can make people feeling very dangerous scared and nervous.

 Setting: It is in an old hotel, do not have any people live there. Crimes always
happened in those places which will be hard for detective to find out and usually don’t
have any person up there. So it can make people feeling very horrible, those place look
dangerous.
 Lighting: The light was really dark up there. Just have one light on, then we can see
what they are doing, and Sherlock can check that woman and find some evidence. The
dark lighting can make people feeling dangerous, and it can tell people there are bad
things happening, like someone dead.
 Character: Sherlock wants to get some information and evidences from that woman,
Sherlock very careful, have strong observation, people will think he is very good and
smart. And there is a person stand there who is a police, he stay with Sherlock whole
time, people will think this event very important for them and very serious.

always wear, the black long coat. So he is very special and different from others and also
shows that he doesn’t really want to follow the rule. The woman wear a pink coat, it link to
the topic, cause the name of the film is called ‘Study in pink.’
 Camerawork: This is low-angle shot. It can make the people look strong and powerful,
also we can see their face clearly. So it can make people feeling Sherlock is a very good and
smart detective, he has this ability to solve this crime and find out who is the murderer.
 Sound: There are some mood music there, make people feeling seriously, cause this part
was very important, Sherlock is searching the evidences and information from that woman,
and no one is talking up there, because everyone was very serious for this event.

Vladimir Propp was born on April 17, 1895 to a German family, and he died on August
22, 1970 (aged 75). He attended St. Petersburg University (1913–1918) majoring in Russian
and German philology. When he graduation he taught Russian and German at a secondary
school, then he became a college teacher of German. Propp’s theory was based on folk tales
and legends. He analysed the basic plot components of Russian folktales to identify their
simplest narrative elements in order, he found all of them were quite similar about these
problems and type of character. So, his theory identified 7 about seven character roles and
31 narrative functions common in folk tales. Then he summarize these common rules to
other narrative structures.

 The hero- Sherlock (He is a main character and he is a genius. He is very smart and clever detective, he finds out
the murderer in Sherlock.)
 The villain- Moriarty (He asked someone who is cabbie Phil Davis to help him use pill to kill other people, then
he will pay him money. So he is very ferocious.)
 The donor- Mrs. Hudson (She is landlord, she gives the house to them to live and let them know each other as
well.)
 The helper- Watson (He helps Sherlock to work out the murderer and give him some ideas, finally he also save
Sherlock as well.)
 The princess- All the victims (Like the woman with pink coat, she was dead and Sherlock find some evidence
from her, and those evidence help Sherlock to find out the murderer.

Disruption: The cabbie and Moriarty
The cabbie: He used some harmful pills to kill many people, and the pills was provided by
Moriarty. This is disruption of this story, police cannot find out who is the murderer, so they asked
Sherlock to help them work out it, and the murderer also want to kill Sherlock as well.
Moriarty: He is the other disruption. He ask the cabbie to help him kill other people use the pills
and pay them money. And he tell the cabbie, if he can kill more people, then his children can get more
money.
Lead quests: Sherlock and Watson
Sherlock: Sherlock agree the police Inspector Lestrade to help them solve this crime. He got some
evidences and information and use them to try find out the murderer. This is beginning of the quests.
Watson: He is helper in Sherlock, and he is Sherlock’s housemate. He lead to the quests and agree
Sherlock to help him solve this crime.
Harm others: The Cabbie, Watson and Sherlock
Cabbie: The cabbie harms many people, he gave them those harmful pills and threat them to eat
them. So, he kill three or five people.
Watson: Watson shot the cabbie cause he want to save Sherlock. He shots Sherlock because he want
to stop Sherlock take the pills. Although he save Sherlock, but he also illegal to shot others.

Sherlock: He also harms other as well. He stepped on the cabbie’s shoulder
Where is Watson shot, and let cabbie tell him whether that is real pills and
all the truth about this crime. Like who is the supplier
Save others: Watson and Sherlock
Watson: He saves Sherlock by shot the cabbie, for stopping Sherlock
to take the pills. Maybe that pills is the real one, if it is, Sherlock will dead,
so Watson save Sherlock.
Sherlock: He catches the murderer and find out all the truth about this crime by using all
the evidence and information. If he has not worked out who is the murderer, then they will
kill more people. So he saves others.

Sherlock (The hero)
Sherlock was very thin and tall, he
has two long legs. He also got a black
curly hair
Sherlock was very busy, he need to solve many
crimes and think a lot, so he doesn’t have many time
to eat and have a rest, so he is very thin.
Sherlock always wear that long black coat
and put his collar up, he also wear with his
scarf and gloves when he go out. He never
wear that blue cloth even someone else all
wear it. And he also never wear tie as well.
This type of dress up is special and suitable with this
character, so when the audience seeing this type of
wearing, maybe they will think of Sherlock. His wearing
was inform, cause he never wear tie, he use scarf instead of
it. And he never wear that blue cloth as well, he is different
from others and doesn’t follow the rules.
Sherlock has very good and amazing
memory.
He can remember the map about London. So, if
in London, Sherlock can know anywhere, so when
Sherlock ask cabbie ‘where is it’, the cabbie doesn’t
answer him, cause he knows Sherlock certainly
know.

Sherlock talks very fast and he always say
the answer unclearly.
When he infer something, his though always
faster than others, so he talk very faster as well.
And he cannot understand why people cannot
think about it and just want the final answer, so
he always give them a point, then let them to
think and he will prove it by himself. For
example, he just shout out a word, which is ‘pink’
to someone else, say nothing about what that
mean and what that about.
He always doesn’t smile, usually serious,
he also doesn’t have any facial expressions.
He has poor facial expressions on his face, always
show his serious face. He doesn’t know about how to
chat with others and how to be friends with others,
but he doesn’t care about this and doesn’t care about
what others thinking either. So we can see his mood
on his face very often. And I think he is a little bit
antihuman and antisocial.
When he is thinking, he doesn’t like
anyone else talk. He also will put two
hands together under his lower jaw. And
he thinks nicotine patch can help he to
think.
If you are talking when he is thinking, he will stop
you, cause he cannot focus on that if any noise
around him. I think this is his feather as well.

feeling his is a very good detective and his has

Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock is the main character in Sherlock, he is a hero and he is a wonderful detective
as well. He saves many people many people by find out the murderer and solves many crimes
as well. Cause he is very busy and need to think a lot, so he doesn’t have too much time to
eat and have a rest, so he is very tall and thin. He has two long legs and black curly hair. He is a
very serious person, he always serious and doesn’t smile a lot, he has a poor facial expression.
He feeling hard to communicate with someone else, and he doesn’t mind everyone’s thinking,
so we can see his mood on his face. I think he is a little bit antisocial and antihuman. He got an
amazing memory, he can remember the map about London, nobody can fool him about the place in London.
He always wear a black long coat with his scarf and gloves. He never wear that blue cloth even all the people
wear it, he is different from others and doesn’t follow the rules. He talks very fast, cause his thought faster
than normal people. He always doesn’t tell people the answer clearly, he always tell them a key word then let
them to think about it, cause he doesn’t understand why people just want the final answer, he thinks they need
to think about it. When he is think about something, he doesn’t like someone else talk, cause he doesn’t want
someone else to noise him, he cannot focus on it if have any noise around him. He like to put his hands
together and put under his lower jaw. He also think nicotine patch can help him to think. I think this is his

He is not very tall, shorter than
Sherlock. He has a short a little bit like
gold hair. He always wear a black short
coat, but he doesn’t wear scarf and
gloves. He also wear tie as well.
His appearance and his wearing are very
different to Sherlock. His wearing is very plain
more like normal person, doesn’t like a detective.
This type of wearing is his style, so if people see
this type of wearing, they will think about Watson.
He is not like that serious, his facial
expressions is not very poor, and
sometimes we can see a little smile on
his face. He is very polite and normal.
He is a doctor in army before, so when he talking
or doing something, you can see he is a polite and
good person, he always say sorry to someone else
because of Sherlock. He never think he is a very
smart and brave person, he just a normal person.
He need to have crutch with him, but
when he met Sherlock, sometimes he
walk without crutch.
He had a shot in war before, but that shot
doesn’t really matter, he still can walk very well.
But in his mind, he must use crutch to walk. So
you can see a part of Sherlock, which is they are
following the cabbie(killer), Watson is running and
without the crutch, so actually he can walk. And
he always follow Sherlock and help him, even save
him.

John Watson
Watson is the second main character in Sherlock. He is the helper,
who is helping Sherlock and give him some ideas to work out the
murderer and solve this crime. He is Sherlock’s housemate, and he is
very different to Sherlock. He is not very tall, shorter than Sherlock.
He got a short, colour like gold hair. He is not like that serious and
not very poor facial expression. Sometimes we can see some mood
on his face, like when Sherlock say something he doesn’t believe and
feeling confuse, he will have some facial expression on his face. His
wearing style is wearing a short black coat and tie. He doesn’t wear gloves or scarf like Sherlock.
His wearing style doesn’t like a detective, just like a normal person. Actually he is a doctor in
army before, he had a shot on his leg, but it doesn’t really matter, he still can walk very well.
For example, when he is following the cabbie, he is running with Sherlock and without the
crutch, but in his mind, he must carry the crutch when he is walking. He is a very good and
polite person. He always says sorry to someone because of Sherlock, so he is much more
polite than Sherlock. And he is a very good friend with Sherlock. He always follows Sherlock, although he
is not as clever as Sherlock, but he always use his knowledge to help Sherlock thinking about the crime and
give him some ideas. At end of the Sherlock, Watson even saved Sherlock. He use the information and
evidences to find out where is Sherlock, then he wants to stop Sherlock to take the pills, so he shot the
cabbie and save him. I think he knows that is very dangerous to go to find Sherlock, but Watson still go
there and save him, so I think Watson is a chivalrous person as well

The cabbie ( The villain)
He is a not very tall, he got a short white hair, and
he is quite old.
This is his style. In the normal films, the villain is quite
old, and his appearance is suitable for this character.
He always wear a long coat, a hat and a
glasses. There is a listing in his neck as well.
His wearing style is very old as well.
His wearing style is very plain, just like a normal person,
doesn’t like a murderer, so that can help him to hide
himself, police hard to find out him. And his wearing is
very cheap, that’s mean he is not very rich, so he help
Moriarty kill other people, then he can earn the money.
When he is talking and listening, his fingers is cross
and put under the table. When he is sit down, his
feet sometimes will move.

he afraid about Sherlock, he afraid Sherlock will find out
the truth. So these movement fit the character mood and
activity in his heart.
His facial expression is evil and fake. it also
showing he is very confident. His facial expression
let people feeling uncomfortable and horrible.
Villain always very fake and evil. Because they need to hide
themselves, they afraid and nervous, but they must disguise
they are winner, so this acting is fit that character.
When he is talking to Sherlock, he always very
confident, his sound always make people feeling
uncomfortable.
Villain always very confident when they meet the hero,
because they wants to kill the hero and win. Also, when
they talking, their sound is very evil and horrible, that can
let people know they are the villain by their feather, they are
very bad and evil, then people can know who is the villain
clearly.

The cabbie is villain is Sherlock. He is helping
Moriarty to kill other people by using pills, then
Moriarty will pay money for him. The cabbie
need money, because he is not very rich and he
need to save his children, his children just before die, so from this sight, we can see he
is not like that evil, he is a good farther. His wearing show he is not very rich as well.
He always wear a long coat, his cloth look very old, his wearing style is very plain, like
a normal person, so he also can hide himself very well, police is hard to find out he
is the murderer. He is quite old, not very tall, middle height, he got a short white hair
and he always wears a hat and a glasses. When he is talking and listening, he is very
nervous, his figures cross and put under table, his feet will have a little movement,
that display he is afraid Sherlock will find out the truth , but on the surface, he pretend
he is very relax, he ensures he is the winner, he thinks he can kill Sherlock and police
cannot find out him, so on this sight, we can see he is very evil, when he is talking, his
sound make us feeling very uncomfortable, and his facial expression is very evil and fake

Mycroft (Sherlock’s brother)
Mycroft is Sherlock’s brother, but he is very different to
Sherlock. He is very rich, so when he go out, he has his own car,
a driver and a secretary follow him, but Sherlock usually go out
by himself, sometimes Watson will follow him, and he doesn’t
have his own driver, he always go out by taxi. He always wears
formal cloth, like tie, shirt and a black suit, different to Sherlock,
he is more formal than him. On his hands, he always brings a
ring, and he always bring an umbrella with him, and when he
stand there, he will hold that umbrella by his right hand and put
his left hand in his pocket, he always put his head up as well, this
can give audience feeling he is a very good person and has strong strength. When he is
talking, he always very confident and has a little bit smile on his face, that can makes audiences
feeling a little bit scared and uncomfortable. But he has something similar to Sherlock, for
example: when he is talking, he doesn’t tell someone else the answer clearly, you need to think
about it and work out what he want to say. I think he is very smart and clever as well, cause he
always can find out someone very quickly, like Sherlock.

Anderson ( The false hero)
Anderson is the false hero in Sherlock, he is one
of the police. He is not very short, he has a black
hair, he always wear what the police need to wear,
so he usually follow the rules, doesn’t like Sherlock.
He is the only one disagree Sherlock to help them
solve this crime, Sherlock doesn’t like him as well.
When Sherlock is thinking, he told Anderson turn
his back and told him : ‘Anderson, don’t talk out
loud. You lower the IQ of the whole street.’ And
sometimes Sherlock will say something bad things
to Anderson, but that is the truth. Sherlock doesn’t
think he is clever, and Anderson never believe
Sherlock and doesn’t listen to him, so they
always will have a small quarrel. But he is a hero,
he always use his all knowledge to help solving
those crimes.

Background information about Todorov
Todorov was born on March 1, 1939,age 75. He is a
Bulgarian-French historian and famous literary critic. He
was married with Nancy Huston, and they have two lovely
children. Todorov has published a total of 21 books, for
example: Introduction to Poetics (1981), The Conquest of
America (1982). In 1969, Todorov produced a theory , he
thinks that theory can be apply to any films. He think all
the films must follow the same narrative rules, so he
produced that theory of narrative. Basically, that theory
have five sections, they are Equilibrium, Disruption, Quest,
Confrontation/Climax and Resolution.

 Equilibrium: This is at the beginning when there is normally and calmness. They will let all the
audiences know all the main character, and nothing happen, just like normal.
 Disruption: This is when character have some bad idea, the murderer starts to attack, and it
starts the main story, some scary things will happen.
 Quest: This is let all the main characters join this event, always is start to collect
evidences, try to solve it and let everything go back to equilibrium which is the beginning.
 Confrontation/Climax : This is usually when the hero found out the villain and meet him, they
usually will have a conversation just the hero and the villain, also they will have a big fight in here. I
think this is the high tide in the whole story.
 Resolution: This is where end of the story. Usually all the problems will solve, everything will go
back to before, go back to normal.
Todorov’s Narrative Theory

 Equilibrium: This is the beginning in Sherlock. They introduce the main characters who are Sherlock and
Watson. At that time, nothing happened, very normal.
 Disruption: There are three dead event happened already, the police don’t know how to solve it and find out the
murderer, when the fourth dead happened, which is a woman with the pink coat, the police found she in an old hotel,
the police invite Sherlock to help them solve this crime, so Sherlock go there and collect some evidences on that
woman, Watson go there as well. So these two main character involve this event.
 Quest: Sherlock collected some information from that woman, then he found a suitcase and a phone which are
belong to that woman. He is already started try to think about it and solve this crime.
 Confrontation/Climax: Here is Sherlock and the cabbie first time meet each other and have a conversation just
between them. They are talking about he was responsible for all the suicides. The cabbie wants to kill Sherlock by
using the pills, but when Sherlock ready to take the pill, Watson appear and shot the cabbie from a very long distance,
then he save Sherlock. Then Sherlock asked the cabbie some questions, then he knows all the truth about it.
 Resolution: Police asks Sherlock some questions about it, then the real murderer Moriarty is appear, then they
introduce him in to the narrative. Finally, Sherlock and Watson become friends.

they have a chat, and
Watson wants to find
a flatmate, then that
friend helps him.
Here also is disruption, it introduce
the other main character and those

main character who’s name is Sherlock
in laboratory. After a little chat, they
are ready to look that house where is
on Baker street 221B London.

the rules of himself, he is walking without the
crutch, he is running with Sherlock.

Here is the confrontation, and here is the hero Sherlock
meet the villain who is the cabbie, they will talk and fight
here, also the ending is coming.
They have a conversation, the cabbie says it clearly, he
wants Sherlock to die. So the cabbie wants play a game
with Sherlock, he wants him to choose one bottle of the
pills and take it, then he will take the other one. During this
process, Watson already knew where are they by using that
woman’s phone map. Then he is going to go to that college
and save Sherlock.

knew there is a direct from behind the scenes, he is
a sponsor for the cabbie, so that’s why the cabbie
kill those people, also he know some personal
information about the cabbie as well. At now,

Then Sherlock does not want to play this game
with the cabbie, but the cabbie take out his gun
and threat to Sherlock, then Sherlock choose the
gun because he already knew that gun is not a real
one gun. But then, the cabbie use the other way to
persuade Sherlock to play the game, finally
Sherlock agree it.
Then Sherlock pick one in front of the
cabbie, they are going to take those pills.
During this, Watson still finding Sherlock,
just a few second before Sherlock takes that
pills, Watson saw them from the other side
though the windows.
When the Watson saw them, Sherlock is ready to take that pill, but
Watson wants to stop him, so he shot the cabbie by using his own
gun, then Sherlock ask questions to the cabbie, he step on the
cabbie’s wound, then the cabbie tell Sherlock who is the sponsor
and who is Sherlock’s fan, the name is Moriaty.
Here is the resolution, the crime has been solve, everything go back to
normal. Then the police is come but they do not know who shot the cabbie,
but the Sherlock know it. So the Watson save Sherlock. When they walk out
of the scene, they meet that man who want Watson to monitor Sherlock,
actually he is Sherlock’s brother Mycroft, Watson know it at that time.
This is the ending, everything
go back to before, Watson and
Sherlock become to friends
and partner as well.

just appear on the beginning of the story, it tell us we have Watson this
character. His room is simple and clean, do not have many furniture and

This is an old building, it is where Watson the first time meet Mycroft
(Sherlock’s brother), and here is the first time introduce Sherlock’s brother as well.

hear their conversation, it shows this conversation is very private, also we can see
Mycroft is a very clever and proud person, this feather is like Sherlock.

is one to one, is fair. So it will make audience feeling scared and dangerous, because no
one help the hero, he must confront the villain by himself. So people will worry about
him and want to look what happen next, is the hero win or die? So it won’t get bored, it
is excited and very mysterious for people.
 We can know who is the hero and who is the villain clearly, then people won’t

around him, so that’s display he likes all the things around him, that can be convenient for him.
 The sofa looks very old and the surface of it is a little bit crumpled, that’s mean he always
sit on it. In Sherlock he always think and talk to Watson by sitting on that sofa.

The Reichenbach Fall is the final episode in series two. It written by Stephen Thompson The first
broadcast in BBC and BBC ONE HD on 15 January 2012, and it attacked 9.78 million viewer. It directed
by Toby Haynes, and produced by Elaine Cameron.
In this episode, the Moriarty appear and set up Sherlock, Moriarty is very smart, so he makes many
amazing crimes, but he did not sentence. Then he makes people believe Sherlock’s sagas are fake, and
order four killer live near to Sherlock, they will kill anyone very near to Sherlock. Also, the polices start to
suspect Sherlock and try to catch him as well, but he escape it. Then Moriarty also forces Sherlock to
suicide because he wants to defeat Sherlock completely, so he use the lives of the people who are the
nearest and the most important to Sherlock to threat Sherlock, after he say those things, Moriarty shot him
by himself, he dead. Then Sherlock must suicide to save those people, because if he don’t jump down,
those four killer will kill those people who are the nearest to Sherlock, so he did it, but Sherlock did not die,
he use his wisdom to make a plan to protect and save himself, but Watson and many people think he
already dead, Watson very sad and make a cemetery for Sherlock. Then we will expect what will happen in
next series.
