Sim Based Mobile Wallet
A convergent approach towards convenience and security in mobile transaction services
Contents
• Introduction
• Mobile wallet
• Technical aspect and process support
• Wallet architecture and implementation
• Conclusion
Introduction
* Transaction services are increasingly executed in electronic format
* Plastic cards are a well-established, proven means of user-system
interaction for this type of services
* No of plastic cards of different service providers for a user is difficult to
manage
* Some vendors have started to move the card functionality from the plastic
card onto the mobile device
Mobile Wallet
* The next generation of SIM cards, the UICC (Universal Integrated Circuit
Cards)
* The mobile phone accommodates multiple transmission technologies such as
UMTS and NFC
* Card backup & card transfer from one device from one device to another offer
additional convenience to the user
* The mobile wallet upgrades the phones to an indispensable life companion –
integrated in the mobile handset for the sake of convenience and security
Technical aspect and process support
• SIM-cards capable to host data and application components from multiple independent service
providers
• Proximity and remote transmission channels
• A secure card management and handling framework implementing the functionalities of a secure
card store itself and of both user interaction and service interaction with the card store.
• Backup and restore of the wallet contents, in order to protect against unavailability caused by loss
or theft of the mobile handset, and to support migration from SIM to SIM
Wallet architecture and implementation
A. The architecture of the mobile wallet (mWallet), which consists of
the following three parts:
• mWallet Hosting Environment
• mWallet Applications
application meta data
service logic on handset
service logic on secure element
• mWallet Framework Services
The framework services we have identified are as follows
• Application Life-Cycle Management
Wallet application life cycle
Wallet application life-cycle
• Application Meta-Data Persistence
• Application Selection
• Backend Integration Services
• NFC Event Handling
• Security features
• Privacy features

ii) Card metaphor based application UI model
C. Application Selection

• Proof-of-Concept Implementation
i)NFC handset
ii) Card Accetance System – Cinema POS
A cinema POS application is developed to test the wallet and select the wallet cards
for a payment transaction. The call flow looks as follows:
Step 1: the film item is selected and the <Pay> button is pressed.
Step 2: the user puts his wallet phone onto the reader.
Step 3: the POS application sends a card selection request to the wallet application on the
phone.
Step 4: the user picks up his phone, and a list of available payment cards is shown on UI for
selection.
Step 5: the user selects a payment card and puts the phone back on the reader.
Step 6: based on the selected card the POS application gets the required information and
completes the remaining steps of the payment process.
iii) Wallet CardStore
Card Selection in POS Payment Transaction
Conclusion
• SIM-wallet is still a challenging task for innovative product development in the field of mobile
applications
• In the attempt may result in a new class of mobile applications substantially changing our
lives, discharging us from carrying around an ever growing number of plastic cards with limited
functionality, security and convenience.
• The mobile wallet upgrades the phones to an indispensable life companion –
• Wallet integrated in the mobile handset for the sake of convenience and security
