Figurative Language
Whenever you describe something by
comparing it to something else,
you’re using figurative language.
You’re a weasel!
means
You’re sneaky or a liar
In figurative language, we use
words in a very different way.
As wise as an owl He’s on cloud 9
Have you ever heardanyone say this before?
What a couch potato! As brave as a lion
I can read you like a
book!
You’re a firework!
There are many different types of
figurative language. Today we’ll talk about
two types.
Eat like a pig You’re an angel
Similes compare two things using the words
“like” or “as.” Sometimes they make sense,
sometimes they can be tricky.
I have been
working like a dog!
As white as snow
Fight like cats and
dogs
As light as a
feather
Free as a bird
Metaphors compare two things by saying one
thing is another thing. Metaphors do NOT use
“like” or “as.”
The cat is a
shadow.
My brother is a
chicken.
The highway was a
parking lot.
My teacher is a
dragon.
Remember, similes compare two
things using “like” or “as.” Metaphors
compare things by saying one thing is
the other. Metaphors DO NOT use
“like” or “as.”
The world is a stage.
Metaphor
The test was as difficult as nailing jelly
to a tree.
Simile
The best friends are like two peas in a
pod.
Simile
Ben’s temper was a volcano.
