REPRESENTATION IN
THE MEDIA
By: Deja Kelling
 What are the typical roles that men and women
play in movies?
 How are the women portrayed in the media?
 How are the men portrayed in the media?
 What are some exceptional shows that aired on
television that are popular?
 Do they fit the average person?
WHAT MESSAGE DOES IT GIVE
TO TEENAGERS AND YOUNG
ADULTS?
 Women always play the damsel in distress, home maker, eye candy, prostitute,
maid, or warier girl that had a really hard life as a child.
 Men play the hero, rich, strong, powerful, and provider for the women.

 Men play the hero, rich, strong, powerful, and provider for the women.
 In the media women are portrayed as gold diggers, sneaky, conniving,
untrustworthy, whores, not smart, sexy, sacred humans.

 Some exceptional shows would be Moesha. Even reality
television all the men and women play the typical
gendered stereotyped role.
 In everyday life, these descriptions of what males and
females should be are not accurate. Because of the fact
that it is constantly on the television people have been
conditioned to think that this is what they should be and
how they should live. The media glorifies a lot of negative
stereotypes with both genders making it the new “in” thing
to be.

CRITICS ON MALE TO FEMALE
RATINGS ON TELEVISION
With more online movie sites, women have more
chances to get into film criticism. But a study
released Friday by San Diego State professor
Martha Lauzen finds that among top critics, fewer
films were reviewed by women in spring 2013 than
in fall 2007.

GENDER STEREOTYPES IN COMMERCIALS
Gender stereotypes are the most popular in television commercials for children with
toys. Around Christmas time you never see girls in the K’Next, Legos, or train
commercials just for the boys. However, the commercials that promote the toys for
the girls are always the commercials with babies like the cabbage patch kids, or the
easy bake oven for girls to back with or the stereotypical Barbie that has the
awesome car with shopping bags and a mansion but no real profession. These
stereotypes are basically throwing what each sex should be like at children and
parents. People never get the chance to express themselves they way they want.
WOMEN ARE USED AS SEX SYMBOLS, CRY BABIES, UNTRUSTWORTHY, SPITEFUL MONEY
HUNGRY, WORTHLESS HUMAN BEINGS. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH IT’S THE ONLY THING PEOPLE
THING THAT FEMALES ARE GOOD FOR. MOST OF THE THINGS WOMEN ARE PORTRAYED AS ARE
NEGATIVE, EVERY NOW AND AGAIN YOU WILL GET SOMEONE TO SAY SOMETHING POSITIVE
ABOUT A FEMALE HOWEVER, THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN TOO OFTEN. THE MEN ARE PORTRAYED
AS GOD’S, RULERS, RICH, POWERFUL, STRONG, PROVIDERS THAT WORK HARD AND SAVE THE
DAY. THEY WILL NEVER BE KNOWN AS ANYTHING DIFFERENT IN THE MEDIA.
