Skills Development
College Magazine
Photoshop
• As I have already worked on Photoshop before there were no skills that I have recently learned but through my introductory task and
my college magazine I have refreshed and developed further some of my skills, for example colour splash.
• I began by duplicating my layer then hiding the copy and selecting with the eye drop tool the colour I would like to keep.
• I then went to select-colour range-okay-inverse-delete this let only the colour I selected left.
• Afterwards I selected my full colour image and hid the other. I then went to image-adjustments-black and white-okay.
• Finally I positioned my coloured image above my black and white image and I was left with a colour splashed photo.
• Here I used Photoshop to change the “BUS STOP” on the bus stop to “LIFE LINE”
• First I selected the area around the text-cut and pasted it onto a new page.
• I use the eyedrop tool to select the colour around the text and fill it in-then use one of the prints on
the rubber to give it the same texture as the original image-and change the opacity to make it look
more old and used and as close to the original image as possible.
• Then sing dafont.com I selected a font close to the text on the bus stop-then colour select (following
the above instructions) it and delete the white background
• Then return to the original image- use the eyedrop tool to select the background of the bus stop-and
fill in the new text with that- finally link the layers-cut-paste- and move to fit the original image.
InDesign
• I had never used InDesign before this year and found it quite a struggle as I am so used to
Photoshop. However after some time I learned the layout and tools were quite like Photoshop
but it is very different when inserting and editing images and texts. For example my main
image here took me some time to place but I finally got it into a position I liked.
• You begin by selecting the rectangle tool and create a rectangle of the size and position you
wish. Then file-place-select the image you wish to insert-open
• You then use the circle in the centre of the box to move your image into a position within the
box.
• To add text you select the text toll-create a text box and begin writing. Much like Photoshop.
Construction Front Cover
Here is my first draft of my Music
Magazine after some feed back from my
class and tutors I have edited it. I was
first told that I should attempt to get rid
of so much white space so I have filled the
bottom left third with another cover line.
It was then recommended that I attempt
to make the writing more noticeable over
my tribute article. To do this I simply
changed the opacity of the band logo
therefore drawing less attention away
from the main image and making the
writing behind more clear. I was also told
that my buzz word in the bottom right
third was not very noticeable either. I
corrected this by making the white
pattern brighter and also added an outer
glow and stroke to the writing so it stood
out more against the background.
Finally I was told to try and make it
less cluttered and just a bit more
organised and cover less of my mast
head. I also made some changes that
I believe made my magazine fit my
genre better I first added a faint
black outer glow to my mast head. I
then increased the noise around it to
make it look more rough. Also when
the class printed out the magazines
my main image was very dark, so I
have slightly increased the brightness
so that it is more clear when printed.
Construction Contents Page
• Here is my contents page. My focus group all
said that there was quite a bit of white space
and also that my publishers note should not be
going across both pages other than that there
was not a lot that needed changing.
• I swapped my lead line and Swapped lead line
and tribute band over from my original flat
plan idea. This was because I thought it more
fitting that my lead line followed the
convention of having it has my main image on
my contents page as well.
• I also took out a cover line as I thought it
looked to unorganised and chaotic where as
now it at least has some order to it. The image
was also placed where the pages would meet
so it would be distorted and unclear. This way
the white space that I also there will not bee
seen as it is where the pages meet.
Construction Double Page Spread
• Here is My Double Page spread after
some classroom feedback I noticed I
had forgotten some conventions such
as page numbers and a photographers
credit. So here you can see I have
changed that in my second draft. I
also made the small image bigger and
added a bit of green through the page
to give it a bit of house style. I have
also moved my title slightly to the
right, and moved the spacing on the
last two lines so they were easier to
read.
You can also see that I did not follow my original flat plan idea. This is
because as I was constructing it I thought it looked too crowded and
not organised so I thought I would follow the typical conventions and
keep it quite simple.
