Skimming and scanning are speed reading techniques that allow rapid coverage of large amounts of material. Skimming is used to get the main ideas and overall content at about 100 words per minute, involving reading the title, introduction, first paragraph of sections, and last paragraph completely. Scanning is to locate a specific fact or piece of information by rapidly scanning multiple lines at speeds over 1500 words per minute while being willing to skip large sections without reading them fully. Both techniques save time over reading an entire document carefully.

- 4. SCANNING Rapidly covers a great deal of material in order to locate a specific fact or piece of information. Scanning is very useful for finding a specific name, date, statistic, or fact without reading the entire article.
