“Use of Contractions”

 At the end of this lesson, students will be 
able to: 
• Identify some different types of 
contractions 
• Use the contractions
 Have you ever wonder what this (‘) 
means? 
 Have you ever wonder what a 
contraction is?
 A contraction is a word or phrase 
that's (or that has) been shortened by 
dropping one or more letters. 
 In writing, an apostrophe takes the place 
of the missing letters. Example: 
Do not = Don’t
Short Form Long Form 
I’m I am 
You’re You are 
He’s He is 
She’s She is 
It’s It is 
We’re We are 
They’re They are 
Examples 
 I am happy = I’m happy 
 He is a boy = He’s a boy 
 It is beautiful = It’s beautiful 
 They are my friends = They’re my friends
Short Form Long Form 
You’re not / You aren’t You are not 
He’s not / He isn’t He is not 
She’s not / She isn’t She is not 
It’s not / It isn’t It is not 
We’re not / We aren’t We are not 
They’re not / They aren’t They are not 
Examples: 
 You are not my brother = You’re not my brother 
 She is not from Mexico = She isn’t from Mexico 
 We are not students = We’re not students
Short Form Long Form 
Here’s Here is 
There’s There is 
That’s That is 
How’s How is? 
What’s What is? 
Examples: 
 Here is your book = Here’s your book 
 What is your name? = What’s your name?
 After analyzing the different types of 
contractions, in a comment write a short 
story using at least: 
o One “positive contraction” 
o One “negative contraction” 
o One “other contraction”
