ADAB IN WORKING LIFE

ADAB (Part 2) -The continuation

(that of) going out (seeking) after much of
‘ilm (knowledge)”

Information gathered are like pieces
of jig-saw puzzle.
It may seem quite easy to get them,
especially when they seemed to be
scattered about almost everywhere.

Some people are keen to only
gather them, to pick them up, to
steal these pieces, and are obsessed
with merely having as much of them
as possible – not realizing its true
meaning, its true significance, its
true place and purpose.

Thus, some people may feel that
they have ‘knowledge’, whereas
what they possess may just be
merely ‘information’.

Actually by “knowledge”, we
are referring to the relevant
“meaning of that subject that
we seek to acquire, arriving in
our soul ...”

The “Soul” (or sometimes
referred to as the ‘heart’,
‘mind’ or ‘intellect’) is the
spiritual Self of who we are -
our cognitive essence, capable
of knowing and of learning.

When we speak of
“knowledge” as referring to
“meaning” , it is:
“ ... the arrival of meaning of
not just the subject per se, but
how it relates to whatever
knowledge which we already
possess within our soul.”

Thus education is said to be
“organic” liken to a living
organism – which pertains to the
growth of our soul.
Education is not a mechanical
construct, but it entails
nurturing of something with Life
– educators to be likened as the
gardeners not engineers.

Actually, (in Islamic education),
when acquiring any pieces of it
(information), you (as students)
should also be learning what its
meaning and significance is,
and how it is to be applied
(fixed) unto what you already
possess thus far – increasing
your growth.

This can only be possible when
such pieces are given to you
by one who has true
ownership of these, and who
consents to give them to you
and helps you with how you
should understand them, and
to form (or attach) them unto
your own overall worldview.

Thus, you must also be learning
from the right person, i.e.
those who has ‘seen’ the full -
the completed picture. Only
they are the ones who can
rightfully teach you how you
are to make each pieces to
become meaningful to what
you already possess.

And the manner or approach
towards making it meaningful
(enlightening), may be seen
from various perspectives
(angles) amongst fellow
students in the same class,
because each student may
have a limited vision of what
the teacher was teaching.

Thus traditional teachers
often encourage revision –
(if individually, the Malay
term used, that I remember
was “menderas”), or if in
group discussion, as
“halaqah” (study circle).
Group sharing exercise,
enhances your learning.

Hadith from Ibn Mas’ud r.a.:
“Verily! The Qur’an is Allah’s Banquet on earth,
so learn thoroughly, then, from (or of) His Banquet.” [1]

Thus,“ Adab” in the original basic sense (in Arabic) as it is applied in
this Hadith (MA’DABAH) is the “inviting to a banquet.”
The idea of a banquet implies the host is a man of honour and
prestige, and that many people are present; that the people who
are present are those who in the host’s estimation are deserving of
the honour of the invitation, and they are therefore people of
refined qualities and upbringing who are expected to behave as
befits their station, in speech, conduct and etiquette.” [1]

TASAWWUR ISLAM

Every tree begun from a seed, and would
grow in stages – from seedling into a plant
which from its onset develops several
important crucial components viz. Its roots,
its stems which then grow into trunk and
branches, its barks and leaves etc.
All of these has to be nurtured and let to
grow in tandem – as and when conditions
permits.
If any of these is neglected, or process for
their growth stymied to only allow one
component to be fully developed without
these others – then the tree may be harmed.

KNOWLEDGE:
This aspect of development requires
practical behaviour, the aspect of being
and becoming. Its area of development
is the inner Self, the ‘human psyche’ or
the state of the Soul reflected in his
Disposition (Akhlaq). Therefore, the close
equivalent may perhaps be ‘human’ psychology,
behavioural sciences, manners & discipline, etc.

“ Educators are like gardeners, the best of them are the local gardeners
with the most experience, who have been living with and nurturing the
plants and being the caretaker of its ornaments. Although they are often
unassuming by avoiding the gaze of people admiring the garden, yet
ignoring them is indeed ignorant heedlessness, compounded with
ingratitude, while preferring others less able over them is injustice ”
'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in
favour];
but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe”
(Qur’an: Surah Ibrahim: 14: 7)

“Ta’-dib” ( ) – preferred term for ‘education’, from the
term ‘Adab’ ( ) meaning: –
“good breeding, nurture, manners, refinement, cultured,
decorum, propriety, social grace, educated, etc.”

“From amongst the rights of a children upon their parents are,
that they be instilled (to be educated by them) with Adab and
to be given a good name.”

“ Teach your children and your family members with the best, and
educate them (instil in them Adab).”

And [mention] when your Lord took from the children
of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and
made them testify of themselves, [saying to them],
"Am I not your Lord?"
They said, "Yes, we have testified."
[This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection,
"Indeed, we were of this unaware."
(Qur’an: A’raf: 7: 172)

“Has there not been over Man a long period of
Time, when he was nothing--(not even)
mentioned?― Verily We created Man from a
drop of mingled sperm, in order to try him:
so We gave him (the gifts), of Hearing and
Sight.
We showed him the Way: whether he be
grateful or ungrateful (rests on his will).”
(Qur’an: Al-Insan: 76: 1-3)

“Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so
do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is]
maintaining [creation] in justice (QISTw). There is no deity
except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 18)

WHAT ISLAM ?:
Adab demands that we know this religion “Deen of Al-Islam”
as only that which has been faithfully transmitted (connected)
through the unbroken the chains of generations of
‘students- teachers- scholars’ up to the Prophet s.a.a.w.

Thus Education, from Islamic perspective, it must not be mere
learning of subjects but must have specific objectives i.e. towards
fulfilment of obligations which has to be carried out in our Being
(thoughts, words and deeds) – but not divorced (dichotomised)
from the bigger objective or purpose of our being a Muslim.
These obligations are what have been fixed (FARDH) or ruled as
such (WAJIB) by Allah and is Messenger s.a.a.w. - dependent upon
our condition, situation and state of Being (spiritual station – ‘HAAL’
or ‘MAQOM’).

It begins with the most basic state of Islam (submission), which one
gradually progresses towards higher stations, culminating with
TAQWA – the state which Allah distinguishes difference in nobility
amongst mankind.
And the reality (HAQIQAH) of our existence is that we are always
being tested in matter of our relationships – from inner to outer,
from creations to the Creator, from self to family, to neighbours, to
society, to nations, to world and beyond – from the world to the
Hereafter, etc.

And it requires our adherence to a single consciousness – within a
TAUHEEDIC worldview – without ever being disloyal or false to our
claim of being Witnesses to Allah’s Absolute Oneness and gratefully
acknowledging His Compassionate Justice (QISTw).
Thus beginning with inculcation of foundational basic knowledge of
Islam – ‘ULUM AD-DEEN, the quantum may be increased and more
importantly, the quality of state of being (HAAL) of a Muslim - may
always change, increase/decrease.
An important bestowal that we seek from Allah in this pursuit
towards excellence is “ISTIQOMAH ” – when Allah grant us firmness
in our station (MAQOM) thus attained.

“Allah (SHAHIDA) witnesses that there is no deity except Him,
and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is]
maintaining [creation] in justice (QISTw). There is no deity
except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is AL-ISLAM. And those
who were given the Scripture did not differ except after
knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity
between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of
Allah, then indeed, Allah is swift in [taking] account.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 18-19)

To strive with TAQWA, requires the presence of mind and
sobriety in our judgment (applying values), remembering every
aspects or thing which are important and relevant towards the
truth and our well-being in the scheme of life we make for
ourselves.
Islam teaches Muslims that for every matter, things, situation,
circumstance we encounter or are connected in life-
relationship, there are always a ruling (HUKM’) which we may
be made to be accountable (under SHARI’AH) in how we fulfill
our respected responsibilities towards them. ADAB is to know
their place and to treat them respectfully and rightfully.

These, on the following charts, are the general overview of
whom we need to relate with our “ADAB” to – while we are in
this world. To know their places and accord them their due.
It is suggested that for which ever lessons, mind-map should be
drawn and annotated wherever relevant as we go along. The
subject matter may seem disparate, but actually they are
interconnected wholistically – i.e. connected to the Divine Plan.
The wholistic bigger picture (worldview) must not be ignored.
For “we are in the world but not of this world.”

Say: “Have you ever considered [this]: If Allah had willed that there
should always be night about you, without break, until the Day of
Resurrection - is there any deity other than Allah that could bring
you light? Will you not, then, listen [to the truth]?”
(Qur’an: Qasas: 28: 71)

Say: “Have you ever considered [this]: If Allah had willed that there
should always be daylight about you, without break, until the Day
of Resurrection - is there any deity other than Allah that could bring
you [the darkness of] night, wherein you might rest? Will you not,
then, see [the truth]?”

“For it is out of His grace that He has made for you the night and
the day, so that you might rest therein as well as seek to obtain
[what you need] of His bounty: and [He gave you all this] so that
you might have cause to be grateful.”

“[NOW,] BEHOLD, Qarun was one of the people of Moses;
but he arrogantly exalted himself above them - simply
because We had granted him such riches that his treasure-
chests alone would surely have been too heavy a burden
for a troop of ten men or even more. When [they perceived
his arrogance,] his people said unto him: “Exult not [in thy
wealth], for, verily, Allah does not love those who exult [in
things vain]!”

“Seek instead, by means of what Allah has granted
thee, [the good of] the life to come, without forgetting,
withal, thine own [rightful] share in this world; and do
good [unto others] as Allah has done good unto thee;
and seek not to spread corruption on earth: for, verily,
Allah does not love the spreaders of corruption!”

“SUCH of the believers as remain passive - other than the
disabled - cannot be deemed equal to those who strive hard
in Allah's cause with their possessions and their lives: Allah
has exalted those who strive hard with their possessions and
their lives far above those who remain passive. Although
Allah has promised the ultimate good unto all [believers], yet
has Allah exalted those who strive hard above those who
remain passive by [promising them] a mighty reward -”
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 95)

“O YOU who have attained to faith!
(AU-FU BIL-’UQUD) Be true to your covenants!
Lawful to you is the [flesh of every] beast that
feeds on plants, save what is mentioned to you
[hereinafter]: but you are not allowed to hunt
while you are in the state of pilgrimage. Behold,
Allah ordains in accordance with His will.”
(Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 1)

“BEHOLD, Allah bids you to deliver all that
you have been entrusted (AMANAH) with
unto those who are entitled thereto, and
whenever you judge between people, to
judge with justice (‘ADL). Verily, most
excellent is what Allah exhorts you to do:
verily, Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing!”

“O you who have attained to faith! Pay heed (obey)
unto Allah, and pay heed (obey) unto the
Messenger and unto those from among you who
have been entrusted with authority; and if you are
at variance over any matter, refer it unto Allah and
the Messenger, if you [truly] believe in Allah and
the Last Day. This is the best [for you], and best in
the end.”

“And nothing is the life of this world but a play and
a passing delight; and the life in the hereafter is by
far the better for all who are conscious of Allah.
Will you not, then, use your reason?”

“Well do We know that what such people say grieves
thee indeed: yet, behold, it is not thee to whom they give
the lie, but Allah’s messages do these evildoers deny.”

“And, indeed, [even] before thy time have messengers
been given the lie, and they endured with patience all
those charges of falsehood, and all the hurt done to
them, till succour came unto them from Us: for there is
no power that could alter [the outcome of] Allah's
promises. And some of the histories of those
messengers have already come within thy ken.”
(Qur’an: An-’am: 6: 34)

“Pulau pandan jauh ketengah,
Gunung Daik bercabang tiga,
Hancur badan dikandung tanah,
Budi baik dikenang juga”
“Island of Pandan glistens in the wave,
Mountain of Daik with three peaks appeared,
Though our body be destroyed completely in the grave,
But our deeds of kindness will forever be remembered”

“Tinggi sungguh gunung Daik,
Mercunya nampak terang berkilau,
Kalau asal benih yang baik,
Jatuh ke laut menjadi pulau.”
“Majestic is mount Daik with awe and radiance,
With the sun atop its peak they appear to merge,
If a seed is truly derived from that of excellence,
When thrown in the sea an island will emerge”

“Pisang emas bawa belayar,
Masak sebiji di atas peti,
Hutang emas boleh dibayar,
Hutang budi dibawa mati.”
“Golden banana for a journey is laid,
One is ripen upon a crate aplenty ,
Debt in gold can certainly be repaid,
But the debt of kindness is to be borne for eternity”

“Bunga melati bunga di darat,
Bunga seroja di tepi kali,
Hina besi kerana karat,
Hina manusia tidak berbudi.”
“Wide is the fragrance a jasmine cast,
The lotus excel in its beauty and purity,
Iron is despised because of its rust,
A person is despised for lacking in morality”

“Halia ini tanam-tanaman,
Ke barat juga akan rebahnya,
Dunia ini pinjam-pinjaman,
Ke akhirat juga akan sudahnya”
“Ginger is a plant that grows in clumps,
Towards the west it’s shoot will turn,
Life in this world is but on borrowed times,
For the Hereafter is where all must eternally return”

“Berburu ke padang datar,
Mendapat rusa belang kaki,
Berguru kepalang ajar,
Bagaikan bunga kembang tak jadi”
“To go hunting on the plains deserted,
Tracking a deer till it meet its doom,
If in learning one is lazy, dull and half-hearted,
Like flower that wilted as bud, before it can
ever bloom.”

“Buah cempedak di luar pagar,
Ambilkan galah tolong jolokkan
Saya budak baru belajar,
Kalau salah tolong tunjukkan”
“Out on the fence a jackfruit is leaning,
To pull it with a pole the fruit can be harvested,
I am just a learner very new to this learning,
Hoping to be corrected wherever I have erred.”

“Ke hulu memotong pagar,
Jangan terpotong batang durian,
Carilah guru tempat belajar,
Jangan menyesal dihari kemudian.”
“The fence needs cutting as well as cleaning,
But do not destroy the branch of the durian tree,
Seek out a teacher to guide you in your learning,
Lest great is the regret, your future will be.”

“Anak teruna menanam betik,
Buah cempedak di dalam raga,
Apa guna berwajah cantik,
Kalau kurang budi bahasa.”
“A young man planted a papaya tree,
A jackfruit is placed inside a basket,
What is the use having only physical beauty,
When you lack humanity, culture and etiquette ”

“Berakit-rakit ke-hulu,
Berenang-renang ke-tepian,
Bersakit-sakit dahulu,
Bersenang-senang kemudian”
“Rafting upriver to reach the forest trees,
Swimming to the beach to rest on the sand,
So patiently persevere all initial difficulties.
To certainly attain the happiness in the end.”

“Orang Daik memacu kuda,
Kuda dipacu deras sekali,
Buat baik berpada-pada,
Buat jahat jangan sekali”
“People of Daik on horses in a valley ,
Racing on their steed in rows of two,
Spread you goodness with wisdom appropriately,
Not a single deed of evil must you ever do.”

Berbunga lebat pohon rambutan,
Hinggap tempua berjuntai kaki,
Bila dapat memandang rang bulan,
Jangan dilupa rumput di kaki.”
“The bloom of the flower on the rambutan tree,
The weaver bird’s nesting is amazing indeed,
When you can marvel at the full moon and its beauty,
Forget not the grass which humbly lay at your feet ”

“Dikala pagi pergi berdagang,
Menyara hidup untuk keluarga,
Rela ku mati berputih tulang,
Dari hidup berputih mata.”
“Morning to the market where trading is assured,
Seeking provision for family not for fame,
Honouring justice and truth, death is preferred,
Rather than life of self-pity, perpetually in shame.”

“Salam menghadap, hamba dan dayang,
Raja bermalam di dendang teruja,
Dalam kitab ada terlarang,
Perkara yang haram jangan dicuba.”
“ With looks so dignified, all the servant and maiden,
With manners and charm, before the resting king,
The Book (Qur’an) has clarified all that is forbidden,
Whatever is ‘haram’ therefore, refrain yourself from doing”

“ Gelama, senohong disalut lumpur,
Masak nasi santan biasa,
Apa guna sombong dan takbur,
Rosak hati badan binasa.”
“Fishing for trout from the muddy river,
Coconut milk with rice, the usual way of cooking,
Avoid being proud and arrogance in behaviour,
Such corrupted heart destroys, your entire being”

“ALLURING unto man is the enjoyment of worldly
desires through women, and children, and heaped-
up treasures of gold and silver, and horses of high
mark, and cattle, and lands.
All this may be enjoyed in the life of this world - but
the most beauteous of all goals is with Allah.”

“Say: "Shall I tell you of better things than those
[earthly joys]? For the God-conscious (MUTTAQIN)
there are, with their Sustainer, gardens through
which running waters flow, therein to abide, and
spouses pure, and Allah's goodly acceptance." And
Allah sees all that is in [the hearts of] His servants -.”

“LET IT NOT deceive thee that those who are bent on
denying the truth seem to be able to do as they please on
earth: it is [but] a brief enjoyment, with hell thereafter as
their goal - and how vile a resting place! -”

“O MANKIND! Partake of what is lawful and
good on earth (HALALAN-TOYYIBATAN), and
follow not Satan's footsteps: for, verily, he is
your open foe, and bids you only to do evil, and
to commit deeds of abomination, and to
attribute unto Allah something of which you
have no knowledge.”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 168-169)

“Work for your worldly needs, as though you are going
to live forever, and strive (also to prepare) for your
Hereafter, as though you are going to die tomorrow.”
(Hadith reported by Baihaqy)

“What I have forbidden to you, avoid; what I have ordered
you [to do], do as much of it as you can. It was only their
excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their
Prophets that destroyed those who came before you.”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary & Muslim)

“O YOU who have attained to faith! Do not devour
one another's possessions wrongfully - not even by
way of trade based on mutual agreement - and do
not destroy one another: for, behold, Allah is
indeed a dispenser of grace unto you!
And as for him who does this with malicious intent
and a will to do wrong - him shall We, in time,
cause to endure [suffering through] fire: for this is
indeed easy for Allah.”
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 29-30)

“There will come a time for mankind (in future),
when they (people) will not care how they work (to
get their wealth), whether it is Halal (through legal
means) or Haram (through illicit ways)”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary and an-Nasa-i)

“Verily, the flesh and blood which grew from partaking
food which are Haram (forbidden) will never enter the
Paradise. The fire (of Hell) is most appropriate for such.”
(Hadith reported by Tirmidzi and Ibnu Hibban)

“O you who have attained to faith! Partake of the good
things (TOYYIBAT) which We have provided for you as
sustenance, and render thanks unto Allah (SHUKRULLAH), if
it is [truly] Him that you worship. He has forbidden to you
only carrion, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that
over which any name other than Allah's has been invoked;
but if one is driven by necessity - neither coveting it nor
exceeding his immediate need -no sin shall be upon him: for,
behold, Allah is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 172-173)

Say: "Verily, my Sustainer has forbidden only
shameful deeds (FAWAHISHA), be they open or
secret, and [every kind of] sinning (ITHMI), and
unjustified envy (BAGHY), and the ascribing of
divinity to aught beside Him (SHIRK) - since He
has never bestowed any warrant thereof from
on high and the attributing unto Allah of aught
of which you have no knowledge.“
(Qur’an: A’raf: 7: 33)

“Blessed is He (Allah) in whose hand is dominion, and He is
over all things competent -[He] who created death and life to
test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the
Exalted in Might, the Forgiving -.”
(Qur’an: Mulk: 67: 1-2)

“Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in
worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allah sends astray the
wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills.”
(Qur’an: Ibrahim: 14: 27)

“Have you not considered those who exchanged the
favour of Allah for disbelief and settled their people [in]
the home of ruin?”
(Qur’an: Ibrahim: 14: 28)

Actually we are all seeking after
“HAPPINESS” … but what is happiness?

“And [tell them that] I have not created the invisible
beings and men to any end other than that they may
[know and] worship Me. [But withal,] no sustenance
do I ever demand of them, nor do I demand that they
feed Me: for, verily, Allah Himself is the Provider of all
sustenance, the Lord of all might, the Eternal!”
(Qur’an: Dzariyat: 51: 56-58)

“HAS THERE [not] been an endless span of time before
man [appeared - a time] when he was not yet a thing
to be thought of? Verily, it is We who have created
man out of a drop of sperm intermingled, so that We
might try him [in his later life]: and therefore We made
him a being endowed with hearing and sight. Verily,
We have shown him the way: [and it rests with him to
prove himself] either grateful or ungrateful.”
(Qur’an: al-Insan: 76: 1-3)

“O YOU who have attained to faith! Shall I point out to
you a bargain that will save you from grievous suffering
[in this world and in the life to come]?
You are to believe in Allah and His Messenger, and to
strive hard in Allah's cause with your possessions and
your lives: this is for your own good - if you but knew it!”
(Qur’an: Saff: 61: 10-11)

“[If you do so,] He will forgive you your sins, and [in the life
to come] will admit you into gardens through which running
waters flow, and into goodly mansions in [those] gardens of
perpetual bliss: that [will be] the triumph supreme!
And [withal, He will grant you] yet another thing that you
dearly love: succour from Allah [in this world], and a victory
soon to come: and [thereof, O Prophet,] give thou a glad
tiding to all who believe.”
(Qur’an: Saff: 61: 12-13)

“[But] do you think that you could enter paradise
without having suffered like those [believers] who
passed away before you?
Misfortune and hardship befell them, and so shaken
were they that the messenger, and the believers with
him, would exclaim, "When will Allah's succour
come?" Oh, verily, Allah's succour is [always] near!”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 214)

“LET IT NOT deceive thee that those who are bent on

whereas those who remain conscious of their Sustainer

My message to my brothers and sisters

“It is He (Allah) Who has sent amongst the Unlettered
a messenger (Muhammad) from among themselves,
to rehearse to them His Signs, to sanctify them, and
to instruct them in Scripture and Wisdom― although
they had been, before, in manifest error― .“
(Qur’an: Jumu’ah: 62: 2)

“and [to cause this message to spread] from them unto
other people as soon as they come into contact with
them: for He alone is almighty, truly wise! Such is
Allah's bounty: He grants it to anyone who is willing
[to receive it]: for Allah is limitless in His great
bounty.“
(Qur’an: Jumu’ah: 62: 3-4)

EXCERPTS FROM FARDHU-’AIN COURSE
“And thus have We willed you to be a community of the middle way
(UMMATAN WASOTAN) [i.e. justly balanced], so that [with your lives]
you might bear witness to the truth before all mankind (SHUHADAA-
A - ‘ALAN-NAAS) , and the Messenger as a witness over you.“
(Qur’an: al- Baqarah: 2:143)

“And when Allah guides a single person (to Islam),
through you (with your sincere effort), (the reward) for
you is better than (if you are given) the whole world
and whatever it contains.”
(Hadith of the Prophet )

“Whomsoever that Allah wishes for him goodness, He will
make him a FAQIH (learned) in matters of the
religion(Deen); and for everything there is a pillar, and the
pillar of this religion is AL-FIQH – (the profound
understanding of the Deen); a learned scholar (of the Deen)
is more difficult upon satan than a thousand worshippers.”

“Among the believers are men who have [always] been true
to what they have vowed before Allah: Of them some have
fulfilled their obligations (with their lives), and some of them
are still waiting (for its fulfillment) without having changed
[their resolve] in the least.”
(Qur’an: al-Ahzab: 33: 23)

“And be patient (persevere) and your patience is not but by (the
assistance of) Allah, and grieve not for them, and do not
distress yourself at what they plan. Surely Allah is with those
who guard (against evil) and those who do good (to others).”
(Qur’an: An-Nahlu: 16: 127-128)
