Virtual Prototyping:
Visualizing the
Next Generation
of Aviation
Products
What is Virtual Prototyping?
• Per the Department of Defense – a virtual
prototype is: “A computer-based simulation
of a system or subsystem with a degree of
functional realism comparable to a physical
prototype.”
• A virtual prototype is built from CAD
(computer-aided design) drawings of
separate assemblies that are gradually
placed into the whole.
What is Virtual Prototyping?
• Can be used for motion studies and studying
interactions between machines and humans
• Can be used to see if parts interfere with other
parts as they move through their complete
range of motion
• Virtual prototyping allows design and analysis
functions to be completely entwined
Why Virtual Prototyping?
• Effects of structural change
can be evaluated concurrently
• Data on in-house manufactured parts and
subcontracted parts can be imported into the
program allowing the designer to determine if
design changes will cause interference for
other components
Why Virtual Prototyping?
• Multiphysics software can also
be imported into the prototype for
assessing phenomena such as static and
dynamic structural forces
• Effects of electromagnetic radiation from radar,
either onboard or from external sources can be
solved
Advantages of Virtual Prototyping
• Can run model through unlimited iterations
to find the optimum design
• Engineers can then design parts to fit more
precisely, reducing manufacturing time and
eliminating the need for large amounts of
rework
• Software has built-in collaboration tools that
automatically update and distribute
modifications to the model as soon as they
are implemented
Advantages of Virtual Prototyping
• Instrumental tool in
shortening time to
market
• Allows design,
manufacturing, and
marketing to work in parallel rather than in
series
• As parts are designed, they become part of a
database that can be used for inventory
management
Boeing’s 777 was a Milestone!
• First jetliner completely designed by computer
without building a physical prototype
• 1989, project started
• 1992, design completed
• 1994, first 777 took flight
Boeing’s 777 was a Milestone!
• Largest and most complex virtual prototyping
project ever attempted
• Revolutionized Boeing’s approach to design,
manufacturing, and test
• Resulted in a 90% reduction in change
requests, 90% reduction in material rework,
and a 50% improvement in assembly
tolerances for the fuselage
Where are we today?
• The use of HP Workstations, powered by
Intel® Core™ processors can run multiple
applications in parallel –
– 3D product development
– Simulation and analysis
– Digital manufacturing
– Lifecycle management software
