Editor's Notes

  • #4: And our solution is… KLATSCH!!
  • #20: FIrst is Blackboard, which we’re all very familiar with. However, to remain current, even Blackboard has changed its user interfaces. It used to have more interface customization, but even when it did it was less user friendly. This put more demands on the instructor, who is busy enough as it is. Klatsch has the functionality to save formats and reuse on different classes. Blackboard is very link heavy and is set up almost predominantly for a instructorto disseminate information to a student, with less capability to receive input and no ability to coordinate with other classes or even other schools. Klatsch is oriented around topics and easily allows students and instructor to have their inputs heard, with giving special attention when an instructor chimes in. With such open, yet controlled forums, instructors can choose how open their topics are, or even invite other instructors/classes into their own. Blackboard - Blackboard has less user interface customization Used to be more graphic Now more link-heavy With a more user centric organization, and customization from Academic accounts, teachers can more easily use Klatsch to supplement their teaching material Canvas is a potential solution to Blackboard produced by the University of Washington. By creating an open source solution, it allows individuals to fix or add features that the community wants. While this gives more power to the user and in this case allows Canvas to provide very fluid class specific assistance similar to Blackboard, it suffers from the same problems that Blackboard does. Why give programmers the ability to change the site, when the non-programming student has so much more to contribute to any and every topic. But, both of these overlap only a small amount with what Klatsch can offer. University of Washington - Canvas Open sourced alternative to Blackboard that has products of class, no longer tied to licensing to blackboard, more classroom management Control coding and updates While open source solutions often allow more customization, it can be daunting to people who aren’t tech savvy. Covers a very small section of what Klatsch does. If you want to learn something, anything, on the internet you can go to ShowMe to see a presentation to get it done. ShowMe is an open online learning community where anyone can learn or teach any topic. It gives you the ability to create “ShowMe’s” that allow anyone to use a powerful digital whiteboard to create these presentations. If you want to learn something vague or something simple then ShowMe may have what you want. This can teach you how to do something that someone has already made a video of, but some videos can take up to 100 hours of work per minute of content. That’s not gonna fly if you have 8 hours before a homework assignment or paper is due. This also doesn’t have the communication provoking capabilities that Klatsch does. Simple put, ShowMe is hit or miss with minimal ability to request new information. ShowMe ShowMe is an open online learning community where anyone can learn and teach any topic. Ability to create “ShowMe’s” that allow anyone to use a powerful digital whiteboard to teach any subject Free, no limit to the amount of ShowMe’s one can create This is limited to uploading videos and has less ability to evoke discussion, as well as tie into an academic environment. Next is Reddit, where plagiarism runs rampant and you can find a topic for nearly anything that has ever been thought of or simple start one of your choosing. It is like a completely open forum where every user can contribute to what comments or posts get ranked the highest. Higher ranked posts get seen by more people, launching funny or ingenious videos into viral masterpieces. Reddit provides much of what we’ve been talking about this whole time, with a few huge differences. The few rules of Reddit are to post valid links that match the description of the topic. From there, anything is fair game. Klatsch provides that level of control back to the instructor and provides more connections, extending posts to all relevant topics. Reddit categories posts by topic or “subreddit”, where each post has to be reposted under each new topics, whether they are related or not. This is the mentality of a discussion board with ranking, which isn’t how modern social media works. Web 2.0 totes the interconnectedness of everything around us. Klatsch is the next balance of control and interconnectedness. Users can rate posts by topics and even add other related topics to help their classmates find those precious nuggets. Reddit We pulled a lot of ideas from Reddit, including much of the user interface. However, the subgrouping or subredditing of topics isn’t how modern social media works. Society is gravitating towards any topic being related to any other, and Klatsch provides that link while encouraging the more academic environment found in blackboard
  • #21: A site like this can be pretty expensive. If this is going to be self sustaining, it needs to make some money. You may say “But money doesn’t grow on trees, how are you going to pay for this?” Well, we take the best of all worlds. Nearly everybody uses ads to power social website, this is the nature of the beast, because hey, it works. But, since this is an academic website, we tailor these ads to the bettering of society as opposed to the plethora of random ads you see out there everywhere else. And if you don’t like ads, you can always elect for a Premium Account, giving you additional capabilities, like making your own topic like “Cat Memes”. And finally Academic Accounts will be funded by universities to allow instructors to back topics to supplement their classrooms as well as open up conversation with other instructors.

  • #23: So we’ve told about our product, how we get money, is there anything else you might ask. Well, it turns out there is more businesses need to succeed. Like looking at the field around them. Strength - Collects technology from several different SNS and collects them in a new avenue. Weakness - Don’t have the capital to develop the idea. Opportunity - Being the first to market with a SNS like idea often creates enough of a barrier that other companies aren’t able to compete. Threat - (Next slide)
  • #24: Due to rapidly changing environment, either being too early or too late to the market is detrimental. Political - Non-support by teacher unions Legal - Teacher-unions Socio-cultural - Hesitation/Ownership of teaching material Hesitation/Ownership of teaching material (as far as sharing with other teachers/schools) Technological - Ever changing technological demands. As soon as someone creates something new, the expectation is that we’ll have it too. Economical - Difficulty to make money using Ads, Premium Accounts/ Academic Accounts
  • #25: The next key business aspect is establishing a Competitive Advantage, which is basically finding a way to make your product more desirable than everyone elses. This can because nobody else has what you have, you have better features that someone else, you’re cheaper, or a combination of all of them. Value - Students struggle with school, but enjoy SNS. This combines them into a new format. People will value this product. Rarity - While there are a few products similar to this on the market, none of them provide all of the benefits that we do. Immitatability - This is 100% Immitatability. We would only maintain a competitive advantage through being a first responder. This is increasingly prevalent with SNS. Organization - The technology is readily available to create this, just need the resources to take it off of the ground. Wrapping it up.
