- #3: Follow your heart! What’s your dream, but ultimately, what’s really important to you? Do you have backups? Would you really, truly be able to accept the job if it meant moving to Egypt? Florida? North Dakota? Who are your references? Who knows you and will be your guides on this process? Librarians are by nature, in general, kind people! ASK
- #4: Preparation and timeline: starts when you enter SLIS, add to your CV, portfolio, pick categories and add to them as you go. Possibly categories: Education, licenses/certifications, related positions, development activities attended, teaching, intellectual contributions, presentations, grants, editorial activities, librarianship, scholarship in progress, professional service, community service, professional memberships)
- #5: Timeline+ organization Again, when you started. Watch the posting dates. Academic jobs, assume 6 months if not said. Public and private, see estimated start dates, or ask if in doubt. Stay organized. Figure out what works for you
- #6: Lots of sites, career center, learn as MUCH as you can about these people
- #7: Careful consideration, negotiation, review your notes from interview day
- #8: Patience It doesn’t have to be done all in a day (Thanks to my director for telling me that on day 2 of the new job) Learn to understand the culture, expectations, set goals
- #9: Assigned or self-appointed, inside the library and out, these are the people who will keep you on task, motivated, inspired, and arguably more sane and tell you the way things REALLY work. Find one before you leave SLIS, seek them out wherever you go. ALA, SLIS, alumni, friends of friends, internships, etc.
