This document discusses the current state of design and some of the challenges it faces. It argues that design has become too focused on serving economic and consumerist goals, prioritizing short-term thinking and rapid consumption over sustainability. As a result, design is seen by some as being in a "philosophical crisis" and ill-equipped to deal with pressing environmental and social issues. The document examines how design has arrived at this state, tracing its evolution from the rise of consumerism after World War 2. It also discusses some efforts within design to promote more sustainable approaches, but finds these remain marginalized with design continuing to reinforce unsustainable paradigms.
