Small cell backhaul trends and challenges were discussed. Outdoor small cell deployments are growing rapidly driven by densification programs and increased spectrum availability. This growth is bringing new backhaul challenges around scalability, automation, and integration. Backhaul issues have again become a major barrier for operators in deploying small cells at scale. While technology solutions are maturing, new challenges involve standardizing repeatable deployment processes across large numbers of sites. The Small Cell Forum is addressing these backhaul challenges through work on self-backhaul, planning regulations, spectrum, and developing standardized processes for acquiring and managing sites at scale.
