Social Media / Networking Workshop
What is Social Media?
Social Media can be described as any form of internet based technology that promotes collaborative learning, projects or sharing of information. This includes:
WikisA website or similar online resource which allows users to add and edit content collectively.
BlogsA blog (a contraction of the term "web log") is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.
PodcastAn audio or video file that is made available on the Internet for download and playback using a computer or a mobile device such as an Ipod.
Social Networking SiteAny of several websites that provide a virtual community in which people with a shared interest may communicate. That interest may be social, professional or recreational.
Social Networking Sites and Social Media ToolsSocial Networking Sites and Tools are the various websites, services and software tools that allow members of these virtual communities to interact with one another.
Social Networking SitesSome of the most popular Social Networking SitesFacebookTwitterLinkedIn
FacebookFacebook is a social networking website launched in February 2004. Users can add people as friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Additionally, users can join networks organized by workplace, school, or college. The website's name stems from the colloquial name of books given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the US with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better. Anyone age 13 or older can become a Facebook user.
TwitterTwitter is a social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Since late 2009, users can follow lists of authors instead of following individual authors. All users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, external applications (notably including those developed for smartphones), or Short Message Service (SMS), although the availability of SMS services varies by country. While the service itself costs nothing to use, accessing it through SMS may incur phone service provider fees. The website currently has more than 125 million users worldwide.
LinkedInLinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. it is mainly used for professional networking. The purpose of the site is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. The people in the list are called Connections. Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection. This list of connections can then be used in a number of ways:A contact network is built up consisting of their direct connections, the connections of each of their connections (termed second-degree connections) and also the connections of second-degree connections (termed third-degree connections). This can be used to gain an introduction to someone a person wishes to know through a mutual, trusted contact.
It can then be used to find jobs, people and business opportunities recommended by someone in one's contact network.
Employers can list jobs and search for potential candidates.
Job seekers can review the profile of hiring managers and discover which of their existing contacts can introduce them.
Users can post their own photos and view photos of others to aid in identification.
Users can now follow different companies and can get notification about the new joining and offers available.
Users can save jobs which they would like to apply (like bookmark).Social Media Tools and ServicesSome of the most widely used social media tools and services include: WikipediaBlogging Tools and ServicesSharepoint
WikipediaWikipedia is a web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia        project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its 15 million articles (over 3.3 million in English) have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world, and almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site. Wikipedia is currently the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet.
Blogging Blogging has quickly become one of the most popular methods for professionals, pundits, subject matter experts and enthusiasts to create content for sharing and collaboration on the web. Some of the most popular sites/tools include:WordpressBlogspotTumblr
SharepointMicrosoft SharePoint, also known as Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies, is a software platform for collaboration and web publishing that combines a number of capabilities under a single server. These capabilities include portal, content management system, business intelligence, search, wikis, blogs and application development. It allows users to perform a number of common tasks, such as publishing a website or intranet, searching for content, managing content, or creating applications, but without having to install one separate server for each function.
