Solaris Wellness Analyzer: Health Screening Diagnostic System Zachary Musial NTR 5502 WI-MCN-2011
What is Solaris Solaris is an innovative, in-office diagnostic instrument for the private practitioner which gives the practitioner a complete picture of a patients’ health “ Solaris is certified for accuracy, and its protocols are based on solid biology, chemistry, and medical standards that stand up to the highest levels of scrutiny and inspection, including that of the National Institute of Standards and Technology.” (www.solarisforhealth.com)
Purpose “ Solaris tests the biochemical and electrical balance of the body. To do so, it analyzes key health indicators and provides you with an in-depth look into your clients’ health .” ( www.solarisforhealth.com ) In essence this system is an automated clinical chemistry
Patient Explanation Collect specimen 2 hrs. after a meal Avoid making dietary changes right before the test; avoid nitrate rich foods No fluids 30min before collection If above stipulations are met Urine and Saliva samples are taken
Continued… Urine and saliva are used because: testing the saliva and urine is the most accurate way to access pertinent information regarding the body’s state of general health analyzing the saliva shows what’s happening within the cells on a day-to-day basis. via urine, one can clearly see how nutrients and other elements are moving throughout the body, and the effect of that activity—or lack of it—on the body’s systems. (www.solarisforhealth.com)
Continued… Testing Options: pH level Antioxidant level Resistivity Cellular respiration Kidney stress Blood sugar balance Liver stress Adrenal stress Digestion Hydration Toxicity Protein digestion Carbohydrate digestion
Continued… The samples are analyzed by the Solaris Bio-chemical Analysis machine and 2 reports are produced 1 st displays patient’s numeric results against recommended optimal levels; included are nutritional recommendations 2 nd gives a comprehensive picture as to why your practitioner has recommended what they have

History/Development Developed by a Dr. David Baltimore of Baltimore Labs, Inc. Baltimore Laboratories, Inc. website (http://www.baltimorelabs.com/) was under construction/transition and of very little help. The company name/product has been under copyright from 1998-2010.
Purported Mechanism The mechanisms are very similar (if not the same) to what occurs within the mainstream medical tests, however with this system the doctor can run all of the tests at once and get the results back in a fraction of the time. An article that looked at automating Lab Techniques found: “Designs that clearly incorporate automation of a series of related tasks may offer the most beneficial solutions. These islands of automation that perform labor-intensive or hazardous tasks are becoming more prevalent and may solve more clinical laboratory problems in the future.” 3
Safety of Use The testing itself appears safe. There are no blood draws, or blood transference; the only needles included are blunted and used for sample transfer. A simple urine and saliva sample is all that is required for the test; basic OSHA protocols apply Proprietary appears in company literature in regards to the analytical software, thus little information was available on the actual test. It was difficult to nail down direct information, part of which is due to a faulty website; when speaking with a company rep. it was explained that the testing is the same testing done in any other lab, only with this system all are done together making the process much more efficient, cost-effective, and more convenient for the patient.
Marketing Methods/Case Studies The color report printouts are a great advertising tool; they look great, are colorful and allow the patient to chart their progress; as well as testimonials… “ Solaris makes testing clients easy. I conduct the tests right in my office, and it only takes 15 minutes to run each sample. I get immediate feedback, so my patients don’t have to wait for results, and I don’t even have to take time to clean the equipment. It’s fully automated from running the tests to cleaning itself.”-Dr. Steven Miner Further the product can be used on anyone, marketing opportunities are therefore limitless
Supporting Literature It has been known for years that certain biological substances can be tested for in both saliva and urine to determine health status as well as screen for disease. Glucose and Heparanase levels are elevated in Type II Diabetics 4 Urine Testing can help determine hydration status 5 Urine testing can indicate and aid in the diagnosis of Kidney and Liver dysfunction and disease. 1,2
Patient Selection Criteria This technology can be utilized on a very diverse population base from Geriatric patients to Athletes and everyone in between. However due to the cost of testing it might be more practical to use with a more motivated population that will follow through with the given recommendations
Conclusion The system gives doctors two different ways of incorporating the testing into their practices: Buy the system and run the tests in office: $30,000 initial investment; $200 a test, or Run the tests and send away for the results at ~ $125 a test More freely available empirical evidence is needed, and would be greatly beneficial to all parties involved The thought process behind the system makes sense, however as an evidence based clinician I feel more hard evidence is needed.
