The solid part of the Earth consists of minerals and rocks. Minerals are natural solid bodies made of one or more elements, and rocks form when one or more minerals group together. Rocks can be classified by their origin as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic, or by their properties such as color, lustre, hardness, and whether they are metallic or non-metallic. Sedimentary rocks like sandstone form from layers of compacted and cemented sediments like sand.
