New Delhi, Aug 25:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday directed officials to initiate urgent
steps to resolve the problem of call drops.
“The Prime Minister expressed serious concern over the issue of ‘call drops’
and asked officials what steps were being taken to address this problem,
which, he said, directly affects the common man. He directed that steps be
taken urgently to resolve the problem, and to ensure that problems in voice
connectivity do not extend to data connectivity in the future,” said an official
statement issued here after Modi reviewed the performance of infrastructure
sectors.
The Prime Minister, who was also apprised of the status of mobile connectivity
across the country, directed officials to explore the possibility of leveraging
existing resources, including Railway and other communication infrastructure,
to provide connectivity in remote and unconnected areas.
He said the targets for digital infrastructure should be synchronised with those
of the Digital India initiative.
‘National problem’
Later, addressing reporters, Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said
the government was proactive and now telecom service providers should also
take the matter seriously. Terming call drops a “national problem”, he said:
“While we appreciate the work done by the telecom industry in mobile
telephony, they have to find solutions, including public sector bodies, as to
why the whole problem has become serious over the past three-four months.
The answer has to be discovered by them…remedial measures have to be
taken by them. The response has to come from them.”

Most of the call drops are happening in the metro cities at busy street/market
areas, while traveling on the road , the suburban and metro
railways,highways,Fly overs,tunnels,Bridges etc.
Adding more towers is not an ideal solution for this call drop issues because
call drops happens because of various issues .Examples are below,
1. Lack of coverage
2. Lack of capacity
3. Interference
4. Hand off/over failure
5. Poor quality network
To fix the call drop issue then we need to provide the dedicated network to
that locations .We can fix this using DAS.
The right solution is Multi operator/Technology Active DAS (Distributed
antenna system)
Distributed Antenna System-DAS-is the solutions that provides mobile
coverage, where the coverage, capacity or quality otherwise would not had
been satisfactory
DAS solutions are increasingly deployed and introduced to mobile networks, as
user demands for “everywhere coverage” are matched by the opportunity for
mobile operators to offer improved services and increase traffic revenues.
A DAS consists of a master Unit or head-end linked to a mobile operator’s base
station. The main hub transmits the mobile signal to remote units (RUs) and
antennas, which amplify the signal in specific areas of the venue.
DAS solutions transport RF signals in digital format from the Master Unit to
the RU. This means that the signal does not attenuate nor suffer any
impairments or distortion between the master unit and RU, and the master
unit can simulcast the digital signal to all of the RUs in the system. Digital
systems can also be configured to support other frequency reuse factors, up
To and including single frequency reuse.
In other words, DAS systems can be
configured to operate at any point on the deployment continuum emphasizing
coverage to capacity. Digital transport offers peak RF performance and greater
system architecture scale and flexibility compared to analogue solutions, and
far less fibre infrastructure while offering Maximum bandwidth to capacity
crowd.
Fixing the call drop issue the first step is Gap filling by using DAS solution
Radio Plannig
For getting a proper result the telcos has to do a proper planing by using
proper plannig tool .They have to avoid their excell sheet calculations and try
to use the planning tools which have the capability to give the quality,capacity
and the data rate prediction map.
